Article Summary for Advanced OBM APA Formatted Reference: Simmons, D. E., Gravina, N., Sleiman, A., & Kronfli, F. R. (2023). Using web-based behavioral skills training to teach online interview skills to college students. Journal of Organizational Behavior Management . Purpose of the study (1-2 sentences): This study used updated vocal criterion, environmental variables, and mastery criteria to develop a better Participants : 7 college students from a large public university by sending flyers to undergraduate classes. 3 participants dropped and 4 other participants identified as female. Setting : Zoom sessions (5-10 lasting 30 min to 2 hours). Dependent Variable and Measurement (Describe how they measured each DV) : Vocal and non-vocal responses as well as the duration of each session. Vocal (appropriate responding to questions, explaining interest, relevant experience, conflict resolution, soft skills, get to know you, future orientation, interpersonal skills, and appropriate question-asking). Non-vocal (body language, facial-orientation, posture, environmental setup, lighting, visual background, and body placement on screen). Assessment and Findings (If any) : participants’ baseline levels of interview behaviors were low and steady. Independent Variable: Behavior Skills Training targeting interview skills: answering questions, asking questions, environmental set-up, and body language . Experimental Design: Multiple baseline design across performance targets. Results (It’s okay to summarize if there are a lot to report) : There was a follow-up and generalization probe two-weeks and four weeks following post-training. All participants' interviewing abilities significantly improved after the behavioral skills training program. Procedural integrity was good in all phases, showing that the training protocols were applied consistently. Participants felt their interviewing skills had improved and expressed a high level of satisfaction with the training session. Furthermore, the impartial rater's assessments, which demonstrated increases in interview quality among participants, validated the training program's efficacy. Write one interesting point of discussion about the study that could be used in class. What are the consequences of the inconsistent performance patterns across participants, especially with regard to sustaining the enhancements made to the interview setting, and how can this inconsistent performance be addressed in subsequent training initiatives? ** SEE THE NEXT PAGE FOR A SAMPLE**
SAMPLE ARTICLE SUMMARY FOR ADVANCED OBM Purpose of the study: This study used the PDC to develop an intervention for increasing morning preparation tasks in a physical therapy clinic. Following the task clarification, equipment modification, and graphic feedback intervention, the graphic feedback was replaced with verbal feedback by the manager in an effort to improve maintenance. Participants: 2 full-time and 4 part-time employees Setting: A university-affiliated physical and occupational therapy clinic for persons with DD Dependent Variable and Measurement: Percentage of checklist items competed for each area. Checklists included 7 preparation tasks for each area. Data collectors observed the area each day at 9am. They also used the TEI-M to evaluate treatment acceptability. Assessment and Findings: The PDC was used with managers and employees and deficits were noted in information, equipment, and feedback. Independent Variable: Task clarification (posted checklists and a short training on each checklist item) and graphic feedback (posted a line graph and employees were told how to interpret it) and equipment modifications (improving equipment storage and placement for easier access). Later, graphic feedback was replaced by verbal feedback from the manager. Experimental Design: ABC Multiple Baseline design across areas Results: The intervention increased task completion from 18% to 82% in the therapy area and from approximately 60% to 76% in the hygienic area. A 3 month follow up showed some decrease in performance but it stayed above baseline levels. The TEI-M showed moderately favorable opinions of the intervention and preference for graphic or verbal feedback was mixed. Write one interesting point of discussion about the study that could be used in class. It was interesting that they looked at preference for verbal or graphic feedback. Would feedback delivered in a performer’s preferred way also be more effective? Inter-Observer Agreement (IOA) (looking how consistently two experienced observers who saw and classified interviews separately agreed). Procedural Integrity (using training techniques consistently throughout several interviews). Social Validity (using Likert scale). Evaluation by a Neutral Rater: rater gave the participants comments.
