2 Article The author is informing the readers about geriatric depression is a common and debilitating mental health condition in older adults. Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective in treating this condition, with group therapy offering advantages over individual therapy. However, only three systematic reviews have specifically focused on the efficacy of group therapy for geriatric depression. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of group psychotherapy on geriatric depression in individuals aged 60 years and older, compared to alternative treatments or no treatment (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). The search terms included group therapy, group psychotherapy, older adults, elderly, depressive disorder, geriatric depression, and depression in the elderly. The researcher screened various study designs to assess the effects of different group therapy paradigms on geriatric depression compared to alternative interventions or no treatment. A total of nine studies were reviewed. Reminiscence therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy were found to be effective group interventions for geriatric depression and were significantly better than most control conditions. However, the long-term effects of these interventions were unclear (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). Significant improvements were observed across different intervention durations, facilitators, and participant characteristics, as well as among individuals from different nationalities and age groups (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). Interesting I found that given the range of durations observed in the interventions in this research can be concluded that group therapy for geriatric depression is a flexible approach. Seven-twelve sessions may yield optimal efficacy, and the researchers findings indicate positive results with
3 interventions ranging from four to twelve sessions. This suggests that the protocol can be adjusted to meet the needs of both professionals and clients without compromising the effectiveness of the intervention. Similarly, the study found significant improvements when group therapy was led by professionals from different areas, highlighting the adaptability of the facilitators in group sessions (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). Less Interesting The study solely evaluated the effectiveness of group CBT and group RT, without any information on other approaches. Ultimately, the analysis only encompassed quantitative studies. To gain a comprehensive understanding of interventions that are effective for depressed older adults in real-world settings, it would be beneficial to incorporate qualitative and mixed designs. The additional research methods can shed light on why certain interventions work (or don't work) and explore the attitudes of these clients towards the interventions (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). Intervention CBT helps you handle big problems by breaking them into smaller parts. It teaches you to change negative patterns and improve emotions. Unlike other therapies, CBT focuses on the present issues instead of past. Group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) suggests that depression stems from negative thought patterns. Its main objective is to identify and modify dysfunctional beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors, while considering the meanings that clients attribute to their life experiences. Group CBT protocols typically consist of three modules: cognitions, behaviors, and social interactions, and their impact on depressive symptoms (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018).

4 CBT is an effective intervention for depression, with improvements observed across all age groups. The results for group CBT were consistent with this study’s finding, although no studies on group PT were eligible. I would use this intervention in group therapy for depression. CBT is the recommended treatment for many mental health disorders, regardless of age. However, it may not be the best option for those with more severe conditions or learning challenges (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018). Modify Intervention The study examined only group CBT and group RT, neglecting other approaches. Furthermore, the analysis concentrated exclusively on quantitative research. I propose incorporating qualitative and mixed methods in the intervention to gain a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of interventions for depressed older adults, the reasons behind their effectiveness (or lack thereof), and the perspectives of these individuals on such interventions (Tavares & Barbosa, 2018).
