1 Project Three Milestone Keisha Roderique Southern New Hampshire University PSY 260: Statistical Applications for the Behavioral and Social Sciences Christopher Magnuson February 17, 2024
2 Project Three Milestone Select the topic and explain why you selected that topic. My topic of choice is "Police Striking Adults". I chose this topic because in recent years, we have seen an out pour of emotions surrounding police and individuals of certain races and I would like to focus more so on the why? Is it because of race or do other factors come into play. Regardless of the reasoning, I don't believe its ever ok for someone of authority to use that authority to instill fear or harm. Create an annotated bibliography entry for your first article . Pew Research Center. (2020, August 17). Race and policing in America: 10 things we Know | Pew Research Center. https://www.pewresearch.org/short- reads/2020/06/03/10-things-we-know-about-race-and-policing-in-the-u-s/ This article provides us with a roundup of Pew Research Center survey findings from the past few years about the intersection of race and law enforcement (Pew Research Center, 2020). According to Pew Research Center (2020), the findings that are being referred to were drawn from two previous Pew Research Center reports: one on police officers and policing issues published in January 2017, and one on the state of race relations in the United States published in April 2019. They also drew from a September 2016 report on how black and white Americans view police in their communities. These findings were relayed to us in the form of graphs and visual representations. Altogether, the information compiled in this article was a report based on a total 19,092 respondents. These respondents shared their views on police officers and how they interact and treat individuals of certain races. Though this article is compiled of opinion-based information, it serves as a marker to understanding how some feel in regard to this topic. Create an annotated bibliography entry for your second article . Graziano, L. M., & Gauthier, J. F. (2017). Examining the racial-ethnic continuum and perceptions of police misconduct. Police & Society, 29(6), 657-672. https://doi.org/10.1080/10439463.2017.1310859 The goal of this article was to take a closer look into the idea that a “racial-ethnic hierarchy” exists with negative perceptions of policing. This is the idea that when it comes to perceptions of the police, African Americans would fall at the bottom exhibiting the most negative attitudes. Whites sit at the top with the most positive attitude, and Hispanics showing intermediate attitudes. To assess, race-ethnicity, neighborhood variables such as safety and crime, and policing variables such as media coverage of negative policing incidents, perceptions of community policing and satisfaction with involuntary encounters with police; our independent
3 variables, were compared to our dependent variable. Our dependent variable was four survey questions, which were used to address the issue of perceptions of police misconduct in the local police department. According to Graziano and Gauthier (2017), data for this study comes from a telephone survey conducted in a mid-size California city between July and October 2015. Studying only individuals 18 and over, the total sample size was 1197 residents, including 300 African Americans, 300 Caucasians, 300 Hispanics, and 297 Asians (Graziano & Gauthier, 2017). This study resulted in only partial support for the hypotheses regarding the presence of a racial-ethnic hierarchy. Describe the difference in communication style of the two articles. Both articles, “10 things we know about race and policing in the U.S.”, which is an article aimed towards a general audience and “Examining the racial-ethnic continuum and police misconduct”, which is aimed towards researchers or scholars, have come to similar conclusions using different methods. While both used statistical data, article 1 is geared toward a general audience using graphs and charts. Article 2 on the other hand, is a scientific journal article that provided us with data in the form of table charts. Although article 1 is rooted more in opinions, it is still just as convincing as article 2 because it lets us into how people feel regarding policing. Knowing how people feel is a key component in understanding the divide that some experience.
