Justin Case Study 1 Justin Case Study Alexis Ferguson LeTourneau University EXST 4363 21 January 2024
Justin Case Study 2 Justin is a second-grade student that was born prematurely. His mother noticed quickly that he was not developing as his older brother did in certain aspects such as language skills and certain milestones. Once starting school, Justin received speech therapy but still struggled with his reading skills upon entering first grade. His teacher now, Ms. Phillips, noticed that Justin was having some problems with phonics, handwriting, organization, holding interest, and distracting other students in class. The school implemented an RTI plan, but Justin still struggled even with the extra help. What aspects of the current federal definition of learning disabilities are consistent with Justin’s characteristics? What aspects are inconsistent? What aspects are unknown? The definition of learning disabilities aligns with what is going on with Justin in the ways of the psychological process of speaking, writing, and reading. The most inconsistent is his ability to process mathematical calculations as Ms. Phillips did not report on his problem-solving abilities. His ability to solve mathematical calculations also falls into the unknown aspect, because it was not reported on, Justin seems to have problems related to reading and writing skills according to Ms. Phillips and his RTI plan. What characteristics does Justin have that are consistent with the research on learning disabilities? Justin has characteristics that align with the research on learning disabilities. He becomes hyperactive once he has lost interest and begins distracting classmates by tapping his pencil or making little noises, this also falls into disorders of attention. However, Justin shows signs of having a learning disability that leans more towards reading rather than anything else. He struggles with phonics; speech and his handwriting are barely legible.
Justin Case Study 3 What procedures should be used to assess Justin for a learning disability? Ms. Phillips has already noticed the signs and an RTI was put into place to help Justin, even with this plan in place, Justin still struggled and showed little to no improvement. Justin should revisit Tier 3 of his RTI plan to ensure whether he will qualify for special education. I think that Justin would benefit from taking a reading and writing process test for his teacher and the special education teacher to get a better understanding of where he really is lacking and the areas that need to be targeted to determine his eligibility for special education and determine whether he has a learning disability/ what kind of learning disability. What specific content area(s) does Justin need help in? What would you suggest to help him in these areas? Justin needs help in phonological awareness. This skill is the foundation of all reading and will benefit his writing as well. The way I would help Justin in this area is to backtrack and really focus on the breaking up and blending of words to create a basis of where he needs the most help. The same goes for writing, Justins handwriting is not legible for Ms. Phillips, I would focus on giving him activities to trace words and letters to help his fine motor skills develop. Are there some metacognitive or cognitive strategies that might help Justin learn better? If yes, in what areas? If not, why do you think these would not help him? I think that Justin would benefit from a few cognitive learning strategies relating to rehearsing and repeating. When it comes to the problems that Jusitn is facing, repetition and rehearsing his words, his letters, can help him with his reading skills, writing skills, and his speech.

Justin Case Study 4 Justin’s general education teacher is concerned about his progress. Do you think Justin should remain in a general education classroom? Why or why not? I think that Justin would benefit better by being pulled out of the general classroom setting where he can get focused on individually. Being able to get individualized help in a one- on-one setting not only would benefit Justin and his learning but it would also take away any distractions from his general education classroom. Justin would be able to receive extra attention to his problem areas and hopefully start to see more improvement with these interventions put into place.
