Discussion Family System The parenting style that I would say I underwent growing up is the authoritative type of parenting. My parents demonstrated both high responsiveness and demandingness. There were set rules and expectations for me. There were some things that I was strictly not to do, such as leaving home without permission. I was also expected to be always in charge of my younger brother. However strict, my parents would afford me flexibility in assessing my adherence to these rules. For example, if any rules were broken to manage my rather wild younger brother, my actions were justified. My parents also emphasized efficient communication; now that I realize it, they respected my feelings and opinions most of the time. For instance, I was allowed to select my clothing and toys while shopping, and whenever I wanted to ask permission for something, my parents would sometimes put me in their position and encourage me to come up with a response. I would select a similar parenting style if I became a parent.   Authoritative parenting creates a sense of precise nurturing and support for the children with the utmost concern for their needs ( Lavrič & Naterer, 2020 ). The kind of interaction between the child and the parent involves a guided, honest discussion aiming to improve specific traits such as reasoning and honesty in the child. This type of parenting encourages the child to adopt positive character traits out of will by building a sense of self-discipline and reasoning. Interaction between parents and their children in as much as they involve guiding should also aim at developing skills relevant to the child once they become independent. The parenting type adopted, therefore, can influence childhood and adulthood ( Segrin & Flora, 2019 ). My parents taught me how to make decisions based on logic and each piece of relevant information. They helped me realize that the outcome of events is a summation of individual choices made at critical points. Although I learned a long time ago, these skills have been beneficial during my adulthood.  References   Lavrič, M., & Naterer, A. (2020). During this period, the child is transiting from childhood to adulthood and is therefore learning to become more independent. Children's cognitive capacity at this age allows them to visualize their futures in aspects such as career, relationships, and personality ( Krebs-Carter, 2019 ). They must define their worth within the society they wish to belong to and therefore explore their beliefs, values, and goals intensely. During my adolescent years, I highly identified with a transformative society based on service to others. This aspect was a critical determinant in my career selection; I selected a career that reflected service to others. During this psychosocial stage, the morality the child has learned transforms into the ethics they practice as an adult. For instance, during my
adolescent stage, I had begun to detest drug abuse and tended to associate morality with refraining from drugs. As an adult, I still associate drugs with immorality, a critical aspect of my ethics that is still practiced.  During my adolescent years, hypothetical reasoning was critical to decision-making and character improvement. Having been raised by parents who encouraged decision-making based on logic and reason, I utilized hypothetical reasoning numerous times to determine a particular course of action. Before deciding, for example, I would analyze the various hypothetical outcomes of that decision, from which I would then decide whether or not it was right or wrong. An understanding of my ethnicity and culture contributes to my identity by helping me build a strong sense of self-esteem. Identifying the positive traits associated with my ethnicity and culture has helped me nurture particular positive characteristics such as kindness. I am proud of my origin and culture and tend to associate well with people who identify with it as much as I do. By understanding my heritage and culture, I have established a specific group of people with a particular character that I can identify with, which has been a critical influence on my identity.   References  Krebs-Carter, M.
