Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is characterized by simply being defiant; outbursts of anger, being argumentative, especially with adults or authority figures, getting in trouble all the time, not listening, and just being mean (Turgay, 2009). At times, ODD and ADHD are often intertwined, meaning, if a child is diagnosed with ODD, they are often diagnosed with ADHD as well (Turgay, 2009). However, there are times as well that ODD is misdiagnosed with adjustment disorder that comes with stressful situations and times, which in this case, medications would be prescribed differently. The drug action on the neurotransmitter system is as follows: Stimulants are usually prescribed for ODD. The neurotransmitters that this affects are dopamine, norepinephrine, as well as serotonin. The dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitters are the two that are majorly affected, giving the feeling that pleasure is allowable, and not outbursts will lesson. There are benefits of being medicated with psychoactive drugs in the case that ODD is in fact the diagnosis. Some short-term benefits are impulsivity will lesson on the outbursts of anger, it will be easier to regulate emotions, and communication will become better with authority. Long term benefits come with this as well, having the time to have the medication help with the day-to-day emotions, having learned how to regulate oneself. With benefits, there are some risks that come. Some short-term risks are dependence on the drug, which could be cause for long term abuse of the stimulant. This can lead to complications with not only substance abuse, but with the heart, the liver, and changes to the brain. It is very important to take prescriptions as prescribed, and not doing that will lead to more complications. If ODD is misdiagnosed, and the diagnosis should have been adjustment disorder, that interferes with the treatment plan. With adjustment disorder, usually a antidepressant is used for treatment of depression from a stressful situation. If a stimulant is prescribed for this, this can be greater cause for abuse later on of the drug. Ethically, it is the psychologist's duty to rightfully diagnose their patient, in this case a child. More harm than not can be done if misdiagnosed. If misdiagnoses is done, that can interfere with the integrity and trust going forward. References Advokat, C. D., Comaty, J. E., & Julien, R. M.
