Personal Psychology Unit 1 Activity 2 Are Teenagers Really Conformist and Disobedient? Required Materials Video recording device Audio recording device (optional) Art supplies (optional) Word processing software (optional) Two stereotypes about teenagers are (1) they will do whatever their friends or peer group members are doing, and (2) they rebel against almost any other kind of authority. In this activity, you will assess both of these stereotypes and then create a persuasive message related to them. Step 1: Consider the Evidence Reflect on what you have learned in the unit about conformity, obedience, and peer pressure (that’s when the presence of others influences behavior). Can you think of some examples of young people who do NOT conform to what most of their peers are doing? What about young people who obey their parents and society most or all of the time? These could be real people from current events, social media, nonfiction podcasts or books, or your own life. Step 2: Create a Persuasive Message Produce a persuasive message that discusses what many adults believe about conformity, obedience, and peer pressure in teenagers and then showcase what you believe about these topics and why. Describe some of the circumstances in which you believe conformity or obedience might actually occur and why. Also, describe how the presence of other people can affect an individual’s behavior. Your message can take one of these forms: A radio or TV advertisement that you record (maximum length 90 seconds) A print advertisement A blog post (minimum length four paragraphs) A letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine
“Trading cards” showing pictures of and facts about teenagers who either shatter these stereotypes or uphold them Think about what you learned in the unit about persuasive techniques. Use some of those techniques if possible. What if you believe the two beliefs listed at the beginning of this activity are mostly or completely true? That’s fine! Just make sure your message explains why you believe that. Submit your work to your instructor. If your work is handwritten or hand-drawn, take a picture of it and submit that. Make sure all text is clear and easy to read in the image. My submission: In the world of teenagers, conformity and disobedience aren't as clear-cut as some adults might think. While it's true that many teenagers may feel pressure to conform to peer norms, not all teens follow the crowd. Additionally, there are countless teenagers who obey their parents and societal rules, striving to make responsible choices. Conformity and disobedience can indeed occur, but it often depends on the situation and individual values. The presence of peers can influence behavior, but it's important to remember that teenagers have the capacity to think for themselves and make independent choices. So, let's recognize that teenagers are a diverse group with a wide range of behaviors and beliefs.
