Careers in Psychology Emerson Lamansky Grand Canyon University PSY-102 Psychology in Your Life August 6, 2023 1.As a business major, Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology directly relates to profitability and success in a competitive business. Typically, success is based on a number of factors such as products, team communication, and employee commitment. This is where I/O psychology comes in to resolve workplace issues from the ground up. This specific type of psychology focuses on using research from human behavior in a workplace and assesses needs to identify solutions (A.P.A., 2023). A successful business needs employees to function and without happy employees, it is much more difficult to achieve success. 2. An I/O psychologist can find jobs in a number of different fields such as dealing with the behind the scenes of running a business. They mainly deal with employees and human resources while working in corporate America. A typical day could consist of focusing on inclusion and diversity, developing hiring policies, or completing research and data analysis (A.P.A., 2023). Almost every industry has a need for an I/O psychologist as there will always be a need for safe workplaces.
3. As a business major and someone who is interested in starting their own business, it is important to know and understand the key to success. Success is often associated with the ability for a business to identify and resolve issues in the workplace. Every single workplace is going to come across conflict of some kind, however it is their way that they handle the conflict that can change their future success (S.I.O.P., 2023). An I/O psychologist impacts my future career, as they would be someone that would need to be involved with running my own business. 4. Diving deeper into the physical selling of items and how people perceive purchases, we have human factors and engineering psychologists. When a business is designing new products, systems, or mechanisms that are being used by humans, these psychologists are there to improve the interactions and make performance and safety changes if need be (A.P.A.,2023). Human factors and engineering psychologists use scientific research to make these changes. They typically will work in conjunction with business partners and engineers to design products that fit the standard for effectiveness. 5. While there are many different job opportunities related to human factors and engineering psychology, almost all research and experiments are completed in either a business or industrial setting. Tasks of this job could include developing products that are self-explanatory and user- friendly. There is also the possibility of testing human performance research and how certain limitations affect the use of products or mental health. Typically, jobs are found in either an academic setting or within government agencies, such as NASA or the U.S. Department of Transportation. Overall, this field offers tons of different possible career paths.
6. A business is constantly looking for new products or technology that would make customer’s lives easier, as these are typically the products that people choose to buy. By studying how humans interact with machines, technology, energy systems, communication, and more, there is no shortage of possible products that could be invented and start a business around. Most jobs and businesses aim for products that allow for maximum efficiency and this is exactly what a human factors and engineering psychologist should be best at discovering.
