My discrepant event follows: It is 1992. I’m in fifth - grade elementary school, and naïvely, I’m put into speech therapy for a slur in my s’s and z’s. I think this is the personal attention that gets me out of class. However, I’m under the impression that I’m well beyond the level of my peer, where he needs help as he is unquestionably not articulating these phonic sounds. Practice as I do within school hours. I find myself at the grocery store with my mom when we see my speech teacher. We presented pleasantries when my speech teacher called me out, noting that I was not practicing my form outside the classroom. It is as if a li ght bulb goes off, signaling immediate comprehension and a bit of shame that I wasn’t applying myself in the first place. I remembered to speak with the top of my tongue and through the front of my teeth to articulate the sounds s and z. I never went back and began to apply all my lessons in class, outside of the classroom. Discrepant Teaching Event Opportunities Applying the discrepant teaching events, Longfield, J. (2009) offers various conceptional opportunities through: 1. Portfolios and Reflection Journals 2. Student Interviews 3. Observational Research 4. Questionnaires 5. Content Analysis 6. Post Analysis of collected data 7. Quasi-experiments 8. Case Studies 9. Multimethod Studies (Page 269) Heavy Newspaper Likewise, Heavy Newspaper (2011) shatters misconceptions of just how powerful newspaper can be in the process of breaking a yardstick. Performing the act plays a decisive role as one struggles to understand the force of gravity, and air pressure plays into a hack of a wooden yardstick. Having hands- on experience far exceeds the exciting approaches of an online video. In other words, if seeing is believing, acting is achieving.
Pros & Cons Attainment of knowledge through multiple perspectives, volatility, and addressing misconceptions are fundamental traits of learning. Investigation and inquiry into principle and theory guide the learner to apply critical thinking. Unfortunately, not all students learn by reading, watching, or hearing. Having a hand in learning by execution of a related focus allows for mental understanding as well as direct considerations. A lack of resources can hinder this process. Not to mention the time and energy considerations for setting up an experiment on such a scale to accommodate a classroom. Conclusion Stimulation and application are necessary to reach a maximum learning curve per lesson. There are various reasons to interweave each lecture with a different approach. Whether hands-on or learning by seeing, the goal is to offer perspective into analytical philosophy and for students to grasp the concepts from their optimal learning mode.
