1 Explain the concept of ego-dystonic sexual orientation and how it is treated. Ego-dystonic sexual orientation is a disorder characterized by an odd sexual attraction based on a particular gender, resulting in anxiety and the desire to change or feel comfortable with a given sexual orientation. The world health organization (WHO) listed Ego-dystonic sexual orientation among sexual development and orientation disorders. Sexual preference presents a situation where different people wish it were different due to psychological and behavioral associated disorders. The disorder may result in anxiety-related conditions requiring extensive treatment mechanisms (Solomon et al., 2020). The American Psychological Association commissioned a task force that found religious identity to help individuals identify their sexual orientation and help them develop through life. Life events, psychotherapy and support groups, can influence how one can identify in public or private. Although there is no known evidence-based treatment for ego-dystonic sexual orientation, affected patients may seek religious-based counseling sessions or participate in sexual orientation change efforts to help them feel comfortable with their sexual orientation. With mental health practitioners heavily involved, the APA discourages misrepresenting the efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts by using approaches that may not bring necessary changes to sexual orientation ( Coimbra-Gomes, 2020).
