Social-emotional Development Milestones and Worldview for Ages K-3 At the ages of five and seven, children develop social skills, language, and independence. Push the limits while maintaining a positive, helpful attitude. Learn the meaning of embarrassment and develop a heightened awareness of how others see you. They want to be well-behaved but aren't as attentive to instructions; they may attempt to communicate their emotions verbally but instead turn to physical violence when provoked (Morin, n.d., p. 3). While every kid is unique and grows up at his or her own rate, here are some general standards they should meet by the time they're in kindergarten through third grade.
