UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOL PRICE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY PPD 410 – SPRING 2023 - KAKI World City Urban Development Visual and Textual Analysis Assignment Assessment Components and Evaluation Rubric LEARNING OBJECTIVES Identify and analyze (visually and textually) urban development trends and challenges facing selected a World city of your own choosing and one aspect of urban development of interest to you with the learning goal to formulate creative and evidence- based urban development solutions to remedy a selected urban development issue in a selected World City with reference to comparative smart practices. DESCRIPTION This collaborative assignment invites you to practice the role of a professional urban development analyst and to identify and analyze an urban development constraint/issue/malfunction facing a selected World city of your own choosing, in the US or globally. The main analytical value of your WCUDA report consists in: 1. learning how to introduce a selected World city development performance using the appropriate indicators and metrics; 2. designing logically-distilled, evidence-supported practical solutions to correct/remedy/reverse the diagnosed urban development issue facing the selected World city using key urban development concepts, analytics and comparative smart practices from both class-discussed and extended literature. STEPS Review the World city visual and textual analysis assignment’s learning objective, guidelines, expected components and format as well as the evaluation rubric below; As early as session # 2 , students will be invited to join a peer or two to collaborat e over this project; instructors will facilitate group formation based on common interests communicated in the student questionnaire form submitted at semester start; Select one World city - The city under examination could be your city of birth or current residence, or one you are not familiar with but has grabbed your intellectual curiosity, can be selected locally, nationally or globally, regardless of its history, population size, prosperity levels and quality of life performance; o Please take note that several past PPD 410 student presentations are available for your guidance/inspiration ONLY on course BB under Assignment TAB - “Student Sample World Cities Projects”; World City Urban Development Analysis – Evaluation Rubric – Spr 2023 pg. 1 Los Angeles Skid Row Source: Frederic J. o Consult with instructor for final approval; Select one salient, timely and researchable urban development issue, e.g.: Homelessness in Los Angeles City , US; Informal housing (Favelas) in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Solid waste management in Mexico City, Mexico; Traffic congestion in Jakarta city , Indonesia; Fine dust in Seoul , South Korea; Public (CCTV) surveillance in Chongqing , China; Post-Covid 19 social distancing in New York public spaces, US; Run a literature review on the selected city and the selected urban development issue under examination using class-recommended resources to locate relevant visuals and textual information and data to support your analysis and argumentation of the issue under examination; The midterm project consists in two components: o Submit a textual analysis in a 5 page report (single spaced, excluding cover page, bibliography and any relevant exhibits; 12 points, using APA or MLA style, saved as a WORD file and as follows: 410_YourName_WCUDA_Report_Spr2023) covering the following: City introduction: using relevant city development performance indicators Urban Development Issue: Background and Diagnosis Problem statement (what is at issue, magnitude and claims of harm) Target population (bearing the harm) Causal determinants Involved stakeholders Current Interventions Solutions (citing Comparative Smart Practices from other World Cities) References Insert the evaluation rubric at the end of your written report; o Submit a 7-10 mn PPP-powered visual slideshow or video production (not exceeding 10 slides (for PPPs) or 7-10 mn for videos (saved as MP4 file) using visual information and analysis based on the written component above. PPPs and/or Videos will be uploaded on course BB for class access and review; Please send both the written report and the PPP Slideshow or Video on February 28 th to rym@usc.edu no later than NOON. World City Urban Development Visual and Textual Analysis Evaluation Rubric Your World city analysis project (written report and slideshow) project will be evaluated on the following substantive contents for a total of 20 pts (20% of overall course grade): Grading Scale Written Report /10 pts City Introduction Introduce selected city urban development profile o Indicating type & classification (size, geographic extent, sufficiency, global connectivity) (.5) o Using relevant, up-to-date and class-discussed indicators/metrics/visuals (e.g. total urban population, land surface, urban density, urbanization level, incorporation regimes, City GDP per capita, City prosperity index ranking, sustainability, quality of life indicators and any other indicators relevant to your selected issue etc.) (/1) Evidence sources properly attributed (/.5) Should not exceed a page, including the introduction. /2 pts Urban Development Issue diagnosis Explicitly articulated and evidence-based statement of one salient, current and persistent urban development issue facing your selected city (/.5) Clearly articulated claims of harm and negative consequences (/.5) Clear identification of the target community or place bearing the harm (/.5) Clearly formulated, evidence driven causal determinants (/1) Identification of main involved institutional stakeholders (/.5) Should not exceed a page and a half. /3 pts Current Initiatives/interventions to fix the issue Brief and targeted overview of the selected city’s urban governance past/current attempts to fix the issue under examination (initiatives stemming from municipal government, private firms and/or third sector organizations); Any observed gaps? Should not exceed a page. /1 pts Proposals and Recommendation(s) Propose clearly articulated, logically aligned (planning, management policy strategies) to correct the issue/problem; (/1.5) o Avoid generic, prescriptive recommendations; instead provide sufficient description of corrective content for each proposal Reference to comparative best practices from other world cities (/.5) Should not exceed a page and a half including the conclusion. /2 pts Research & Writing Quality Logical flow and clarity (use of introduction & conclusion, label each section with an appropriate sub-heading, avoid writing in one single block, follow recommended outline in structuring the report); Sound use of evidence and appropriate attribution (use in-text citation); insert consulted references in the bibliography section, avoid using footnotes or endnotes.
