PSCI 2020: World Politics TEST 1 Study Guide: Theories of International Politics *Test questions are pulled from my lectures, not the textbook – in many cases, these do overlap. Test: 25 Multiple Choice Questions and 2 Essay Questions Multiple Choice: Focus on terms, concepts, events, and basic information from the theories we learned in this unit. Essays: Focus on being able to summarize and explain ALL THEORIES COVERED in this unit: Realism (as inspired by Machiavelli) and its main variants, assumptions and features; Liberalism/Idealism (as inspired by Kant) and its main variants, assumptions and features; Democratic Peace Theory (why an example of Liberalism and other details from lecture); Economic Structuralism (as inspired by Marx) and its assumptions and features; and Constructivism (as explained by Huntington) and its main variants, assumptions and features. NOTE: “Essay” does NOT mean: “write a quick few sentences and I’m out of here” (when I grade these, I often slap an “F” on them and move to the next, because such answers cannot possibly contain the needed details and information to earn a passing grade). “Essay” means “develop all info, details, examples, etc – or at least as many of them as time allows.” Each essay you write should contain several paragraphs of information, if not several pages. Aspire to write furiously until the end of your time: which means you must be thoroughly prepared, which means you must study over and over until you have all of this information firmly memorized and can recall it when you quiz yourself! Do not stop studying until you can do so. List of terms to know: this list may or may not be exhaustive: if I covered it: know it: Treat of Westphalia Thucydides Peloponnesian War Confederation Empire City-State Delian League Concert of Europe League of Nations United Nations
Congress of Vienna Napoleon Levee en Masse World War 1: causes, alliances, outcomes World War 2: causes, alliances, outcomes Appeasement Colonialism Pax Americana Cold War: causes, alliances, events mentioned in lecture, outcome WMD MAD SDI Sinking of Cheonan and reasons for it Democratic Peace Theory: Simple and Dyadic versions Velvet Revolution Bolivarian Revolution Occupy Wall Street Realism Hegemonic Stability Theory Balance of Power Theory Machiavelli: virtue, fortune, Agathocles, Liverotto, Cesare Borgia Prisoner’s Dilemma: views per realism and liberalism Liberalism or Idealism Complex Interdependence Theory Locke and Hobbes on human nature
Positive sum / Zero sum Kant: features that would create perpetual peace Economic Structuralism Classes per Marx Marx on historical evolution and final form of government Surplus Value Wage and Investment disparities Constructivism Identity Interests Various “maps” according to Huntington and why his “map” is correct
