Michael Campagnuolo 1. Which theories of contentious politics best explain why the Tea Party and the Resistance arose and were successful when they were? Tea Party groups stated their ideology as restoring the government to the role they claimed the Constitution envisioned by reducing its involvement in the economy. Tea Party activists particularly opposed the government “bailout” of the financial industry in the wake of the Great Recession and Obama’s proposed health care reform. They called for a balanced budget with lower taxes and spending, reduced environmental regulations, and an end to “pork barrel” spending in Congress. This was a conservative social movement aimed at restoring a previous era in American politics or, in their words, “taking back our country.” A number of political scientists, however, argued that other grievances were at work as well. What do the outcomes of the two movements suggest for the debate over the impact of contentious politics in general? Resistance affected American politics in significant ways. In opinion polls at the height of its influence, nearly one-quarter of Americans said they were supporters of the Tea Party, though a tiny fraction of those actively participated. The group’s electoral efforts ultimately nominated over one hundred Congressional candidates and elected thirty-nine to Congress in 2010. The Tea Party Caucus’s budgetary demands led to a brief shutdown of the federal government in 2013 and the ouster of the incumbent Speaker of the House in 2015. By the 2016 presidential primaries, several major Republican candidates had emerged from or were open supporters of the Tea Party. All were defeated, however, by Donald Trump, who did not have a direct organizational tie to the movement but was the chief spokesman for the claim, popular within the Tea Party, that President Obama was ineligible to be president because he was not born in the United States. The Resistance arguably became the largest left-oriented social movement in a half century in the United States.
