Memorandum TO: United States Air Force FROM: Chrystal McDonough DATE: 25 July 25, 2022 SUBJECT: Gender Discriminatory Polices The Air Force currently has a Dress and Appearance regulation that states females must shave their legs when wearing the dress uniform. This policy discriminates against women, as men do not have the same requirement. This memo is directed to the leadership that oversees the Dress and Appearance Review Committee. To correct this issue, a Diversity and Inclusion Committee should be created to review current and future policies to ensure that current discriminatory policies are identified and create proposals to correct them. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee program will include definition and objectives for diversity and inclusion, training on organizing a squadron’s vision, unconscious biases, active listening, and asking questions to hand diversity discussions. This training will initially be the foundation of the committee, which the committee will then expand upon as issues are identified. The only additional costs to the Air Force will be $150 per person on the committee for their initial training as described above. The benefits will include a more accepting environment, and retention rates are expected to rise. Approximately 25% of the Air Force is women, and ensuring that the Air Force is not setting discriminatory policies should be prioritized.
