Priorit y Event/ Person/ Term Brief Description Justification 1 Brown vs Board of Education May 17th, 1954, the court decided Brown versus Board of Education of Topeka Opening a new civil rights era, the justices reversed the 1986 case of Plessy versus Ferguson by ruling that sending African American children to separate but equal schools denied them equal treatment under the constitution. This was a huge turning point and a push to desegregating America. 2 Civil Rights Act of 1964 Passed July 2, 1964. This law prohibited segregation in public accommodations such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, theaters, and parks. It also created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and included gender in the list of categories protected against discrimination, a provision whose consequences were scarcely suspected in 1964. 3 Voting Rights Act Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965. It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting. This aided in the increase of African American registration in states jumping from 27% to 55% within the first year.
