Report
Bri Metzger POLS 110 30 August 2023 The government plays a large part in the balance between protecting personal freedoms and ensuring the safety and well-being of the public as a whole. Finding the perfect balance between the two is crucial. Prioritizing one over the other can cause distrust in the government and/or cause our country to crumble in a modernized civil war. Some examples we have seen of this include the creation of TSA and the Roe v. Wade reversal. As discussed in our class the creation of the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) was welcomed after the 9/11 attacks. It has helped secure air travel for US citizens which after 9/11, was much needed. There are areas of the TSA already in place that could be better about doing what they are designed to do, which is to protect US citizens from any terrorist attacks. Overall this is an excellent example of limiting personal freedoms for the safety of the country as a whole. Another good example that we did not discuss in class is the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This was a monumental court case that initially took place in 1973. It recognized that the decision on whether to continue or end a pregnancy belongs to the individual, not the government. In 2022, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. They decided that the interpretation of liberty in the Constitution did not apply to women’s reproductive health. The outpour of public backlash showed how this is a prime example of the government interfering too far with personal freedoms. Realistically, our government is made up of individuals who are only human. Yet we continuously see the issue of too much or not enough being done in terms of public safety while preserving personal freedoms. It is a fine line that has gotten further and further from being balanced. I think that at this point in our country protecting personal freedoms significantly outweighs the protection of public safety. This is because we have all these restrictions put into place to better protect our society's safety, yet public freedoms are still being taken away in the guise of “extending public safety.” If the government continues to limit personal freedoms in this way it will be detrimental to our country as its citizens will have no faith in our leaders.
