Report
Routinely, I am asked to share academic and professional opportunities with my students. In the past, I placed some of my brightest students in internships and employment or have recommended others for scholarships and fellowships leading toward a political science major or graduate study. After 30-plus years, I have remained in contact with a few prodigies who have pursued graduate or professional degrees or started careers in government locally in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. A common takeaway my past students have shared was their goal in life is to make a difference in society or in the lives of others. On January 3, 2022, I was informed of a job opportunity, and I am sharing it here so you can discover the possibilities afforded with the skills acquired from this type of course. Open the attachment and read this sample  job announcement. Read the instructions in Questions . Latino Politics COR (POL 21) Writing Assignment.pdf   Examine the position, location, and compensation. Consider the duties and the immediate and long-term expectations of the ideal candidate. Would you be interested? Do you have the potential to carry out this or a similar higher-order thinking job?  I assure you that if you perform well on this simulated writing assignment, you will demonstrate that this type of career is attainable if you desire it. Proceed by clicking on the  Take The Quiz  button to read the assignment and instructions. You have multiple attempts. Flag question: Question 1 Question 1 50 pts Targeted Student Learning Objective: Explain a contemporary ethnic and racial policy issue in the United States or California The writing assignment worth 50 points (equal to the midterm exam) focuses on one of the three Student Learning Objectives for this course. It is designed to have students demonstrate an aptitude valued in higher education and professions. This task calls on students to demonstrate higher-order thinking skills about issues and conflicts for which solutions are available given the optimal use of accessible data. Students are asked to develop, evaluate, and propose hypotheses. Students are assigned to construct sound explanations and counter opposing points of view. Assignment: Using current demographic data to make predictions about political behavior, analyze how to advise any racial/ethnic subgroup examined in this course on how to effectively participate in politics at the national, state, county, or local levels. Instructions: Keep in mind this is a simulation. Assume you are hired for this or a similar job and you are assigned to a team of analysts. Some are senior veterans but some would be entry-level associates expected to perform
supporting roles. [Think of your instructor as the senior veteran you can go to for guidance and answers] The initial task would be for you to gather preliminary data on a Hispanic/Latino subgroup in the U.S. of your selection. Decide on a specific subgroup (Mexican American, Puerto Ricans, Cuban, Dominican, Central American). For our purposes, you are to focus on one particular local, state, or national issue confronting your selected group. Issues can range from environmental, housing, and nutritional insecurities to educational, employment, crime, health care, and civil rights. Select a limited set of data Links to an external site. (other sources of data may be used too) that supports your focused thesis on the political issue and make recommendations for appropriate political responses by the selected group. Reflect on what you learned in the course about the methods for articulating political interest. Prepare an intentional authoritative, nonpartisan analysis as an initial proposal. In the real world, your work would be one of many submitted working documents setting a foundation or outline where the team would select from and then build on to produce a comprehensive action plan whose audience or readers may range from legislators to special interest groups. Potentially, you and your team would have to prepare presentations, workshops, conduct consultation meetings. The burden would not fall only on you. You would gain strength in numbers. But for this writing assignment, you are to work independently - no group work. Deliverables: Submit a 5-page, double-spaced proposal using Times New Roman, size 12 font, and one-inch margins. Align your content with the left margin, no justified text. Use underlined headings to divide your writing into 3 to 4 sections: 1. Abstract or a summary of the content (max. 200 words) identifying the who, what issue, where, and why. 2. Population or Subgroup indicating a specific geographic location (cities, counties, states, or nationally). Quantify and qualify. 3. Political issue or problem and the reason for its existence. Quantify and qualify. 4. Proposed political action and the intended outcome and timeline. Quantify and qualify necessary resources, if available. A citation page listing sources of information used does not count in the five- page limit of the assignment. Due date: May 26, 2023, by 11:59 pm. As in the real world with all grant applications or proposals, if not submitted before the cut- off, proposals get no consideration.
