Legislative Policy Tracking Assignment
Health policy is often the result of legislative action that establishes the scope, funding, and focus for the
policy in action. In this assignment, you will identify
already enacted
legislation related to diabetes.You
will track that legislation from its introduction to its enactment, then discuss the impact of the legislation
on your topic. Your chosen legislation may come from local (city), state, or federal government but be
sure that you are able to track the legislation throughout the policy process. Note that the legislation does
not have to be a health policy per se; it can be a social or environmental policy that impacts health.
Please pick a legislative policy that has been passed from 2010-on.

Helpful Tips
How to find federal legislation:
https://www.congress.gov/
How to find state or local legislation: Use a search engine to search “[state or local government]
legislature” – e.g., googling “Pennsylvania legislature” results
https://www.legis.state.pa.us/
Professional organizations often have a political advocacy arm. Many of these groups regularly track
legislation and have links to search both State and Federal legislation on their website. The search
results may link to government websites that include the content of the legislation, sponsor, and
current status.
AVOID current legislation that has
not
been signed into law.
AVOID resolutions proclaiming September as Sepsis Awareness Month, or one that offers
congratulations to school nurses for participating in children’s vaccines. While these are interesting,
they are not fundamentally important to
health policy
.
AVOID very old legislation, as it may be difficult to find all the original details and it may have a
long history of amendments; legislation that took many years to pass may also have the same
problem.
