Experiment 2: Acceleration due to gravity Student name: Graham Herkenrath Pre-lab section: 1) Introduction: Explain the theory behind this experiment in a paragraph between 150 and 250 words. (2 Points) This experiment is about the acceleration of a falling object that is observed to be in free fall, meaning that naturally occurring air resistance is not accounted for, making it possible to calculate the height of the drop and the gravitational acceleration on the object through the following equations: h = ½gt^2, g=2h/t^2. In this experiment both a golf ball and a steel ball will be dropped from a drop box and the time it takes for them to reach the timing pad will be recorded which will then be used to calculate the gravitational force acting on the object. This calculated value of gravitational force can then be compared to the accepted value of gravitational force, which is approximately 9.81 m/s^2, to find what the percent error is from the calculations. The mass and diameter of both the steel ball and the golf ball will also be calculated to make further calculations. 2) Hypothesis: In an If /Then statement, highlight the purpose of the experiment. If the steel or golf ball are not affected by air resistance ensuring the only force acting on the balls is gravity, then the acceleration of the objects descent or gravity should be around 9.8 m/s^2. 5) Attach the image of samples of your calculation here. (2 points) 6) In a paragraph between 100 and 150 words, explain what you Learn. What conclusion can you draw from the results of this lab assignment? (2 points) I learned that gravity affects any and all objects the same when in free fall and air resistance is not measured because when we timed different objects falling from different heights they had very similar results. I also learned that the effect of gravity can be calculated just by finding the height at which an object is falling from and the time it takes for that object to reach the ground. The conclusions I can draw is that gravity acts on all objects the same and is independent of any and all factors which why any object can be used to calculate gravity simply by measuring height and time. 7) In one sentence, compare the results of the experiment with your Hypothesis. Why? (1 point)
The results of the experiment were as expected and predicted from the hypothesis because gravity was calculated to be approximately 9.81 m/s^2 which was independent of the object that was falling or from where it was falling from because gravity is always the same in free fall. 8) Attach your response to the questions in the lab manual here.
