Legalized Abortions 1 Should Abortions be Mother’s Choice? Nickole Wood University of Arizona Global Campus Mr. Eric Maass PHI 103 Informal Logic August 28, 2023
Legalized Abortions 2 Suppose someone looks up the definition of abortion. In that case, it will tell the reader it is the termination of a pregnancy by removing or expulsing an embryo or fetus—in Lehman's terms, the end of human life. Basically, the baby has no chance of surviving on its outside of the mother's womb. Abortions have been a controversial topic of discussion since Roe Vs. Wade. People believe it is wrong because it is an innocent life murdered, while others think, "My body, my choice." So many factors go into play when it comes to the women's decision as to why she is getting an abortion. Was there a sexual assault, is the mother or unborn child going to have health issues? Could either of their lives be at stake if she goes to full term? So, the questions remain at large to this day, should abortion still be legal or the mother's decision? Present the argument that Abortion Should not be Legal On the other side of the argument, some studies have stated that abortions should not be legal. The fetus is a human life, and the mother has no choice. Premise 1 : A fetus is separate from its mother. Even though it lives inside the mother for nine months, it is its person. Premise 2 : A fetus is still considered a human being. "Fetus has to be regarded as an example of human being." (Dabbagh,2009) Premise 3 : Even though not born, the fetus is still a child. It will continue to grow and mature. "For instance, we can regard the fetus which is 20 weeks or more as a person." (Dabbagh, 2009) Premise 4: Life begins with conception. Premise 5: "First, it is from the distinct from any cell of the mother or the father. This is clear because it is growing in a distinct direction. Its growth is internally directed to its survival and maturation. Second, the embryo is human: it has genetic makeup characteristic of human beings.
Legalized Abortions 3 Third, and most importantly, the embryo is a complete or whole organism, though immature." (George & Lee, 2005) Conclusion : Therefore, under no circumstances getting an abortion is never the answer, and just wrong. They say people can hear a baby's heartbeat at 8 to 21 days old. Taking an innocent life is never justified, especially for a baby. Human life has value. Present the argument that Abortion should be Legal. Premise 1 : Having children is expensive. Not everyone can financially afford to have children. "The reasons women give for having an abortion underscore their understanding of the economic impact unplanned childbearing would have on themselves and their families. Most abortion patients say they cannot afford a child or another child, and most say that having a baby would interfere with their work, school, or ability to care for their other children." (Boonstra, 2016) Premise 2 : Concerns for the mother's or babies' health that could lead to death. "At times, the pregnancy can be a high risk to the mother's safety and well-being. An estimated 700 women die from pregnancy complications each year in the U.S. There may also be worries about the health of the fetus. This can be found during genetic testing in early pregnancy or during an anatomy scan at about 20 weeks." (Stacey, 2023). Premise 3: The mother may have PTSD from the child being born out of rape or incent. "In the United States, an estimated 25,000 to 35,000 pregnancies are caused by rape each year. Half of all rape-related pregnancies end in abortion." (Stacey, 2023) Conclusion : Therefore, everyone should be more relaxed to judge. Not every situation is the same. People must be more understanding and allow the woman to decide in this complex and challenging time. Analysis of the Arguments

Legalized Abortions 4 Both arguments have a solid premise and are supported by scholarly research. Upon further reading on the matter, I was able to locate studies to future prove the data and show even more documentation. These articles are intended to educate the public and anyone in general on the subject at hand. You can see that the writers are trying to persuade the readers to agree with their points of view. There are so many reasons behind what influences what drives people. Turn on the news, and you see people burning down women's clinics that allow abortions. We do not know why a woman made that life-altering decision. Disagreeing with their decision does not give you the right to judge. Researchers try to get the reader to "take their side." The articles on the opposition side want us to see the women who choose Abortion as the devil. Sometimes these women feel as if they have no other options. Most of the time, not always, these people were not physicians. In the articles it discusses how abortions may be the safe option. It processed to go into case studies, gave the statistics, and most of the writers were usually doctors. Not saying that does not make them any less valid. They have a couple more letters behind their name to explain what they are discussing. With this subject, it can be hard to remain biased. However, in a matter such as this, considering the second argument, if a woman was sexually assaulted, there is enough evidence that she should not have to go through life reliving that event daily when she looks at that child. Also, with all the research provided, it is hard to disagree with Dabbagh stating that a fetus is a human being. Anywhere from 8-12 weeks of pregnancy, the mother can hear the baby's heartbeat. Presentation of my own Argument
Legalized Abortions 5 Based on what I have learned from my research and my assessment I found I will now present my reasoning regarding the legality of Abortion: Premise 1: While every person has unique reasons for seeking an abortion, researchers have found that those who have had the procedure report several common factors that influenced their decision: financial concerns. (Stacey, 2023) Premise 2 : Abortion is a safe way to end pregnancy if you are not ready. Premise 3 : Abortion is common. 1 in 4 women in the U.S. will have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old. Premise 4 : June 24, 2022, Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to Abortion established prior by Roe vs Wade. Premise 5: Concerns with health or possible fetal health problems. Premise 6: Just emotionally and mentally unprepared to raise a child. Conclusion : Therefore, it is your body, your decision. There could be several reasons a woman is not ready for a child. It could be concerns for her health, issues with the unborn baby, being mentally unprepared, or just the timing is not right. Having a baby is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Response to Objection to the Argument An article was published in 2013, “Understanding Why Women Seek Abortion in the U.S” . In the article, it describes why women decide to have abortions. Some reasons discussed are financial issues, not the ideal housing situation, health, the overall timing of the pregnancy, already having other children, issues with narcotics, and so on. "The predominant themes identified as the reason for seeking Abortion included financial reasons (40%). Timing (36%) partner-related reasons (31%), and the need to focus on other children (29%). Most women
Legalized Abortions 6 reported multiple reasons for seeking an abortion, crossing over several themes (64%)." (Biggs, Gould, & Foster 2013) "' Women-focused "reasons, such as those related to timing, the woman's physical or mental health or completed family size." (Biggs et al. 2013) Basically, what they are saying is that having a child would mentally and physically put their life in jeopardy. So, their only option would be to terminate the pregnancy. "Having a baby would dramatically change my life." (Biggs et al. 2013) Having a baby is no easy task. It will interfere with your education if you are in school. You will have to figure out daycare and your work schedule. On average, daycare is roughly $284 a week. That is just for one child. Suppose you are a single parent; that's a lot of money. Not to include diapers, formula, and clothes, and those are just the basics the baby will need. You aren't even including if the baby gets sick and requires an emergency room visit. This may be why the reason being financial is the highest percentage of why women get an abortion. However, the studies find that many decided to get an abortion for several different reasons. At the end of the day, they do it based on their circumstances based on what is best for them. Conclusion In conclusion, everyone is going to have a different opinion. That doesn't make what you think right or wrong. I did find these premises to be true; both of them supported Abortion, as well being against Abortion. The ones against Abortion believe the fetus is a human life and that it does not belong to anyone except its own. Where there are others that believe it's the mother's choice to make her own decision for whatever the case may be, health issues, finances, or rape. Abortion is not an easy decision. For years women have had abortions and continue to have the right to be able to make that choice. We legalized abortions; it helps make women make the safe
