Explain what is meant by “professional use of self.” How can your personal experiences,
cultural heritage, values, and beliefs be a barrier and how might you overcome that barrier?
How can “professional use of self” build rapport and trust with a client? Explain how
important it is for a social worker to set aside personal biases and ensure ethics are front and
center.
The deliberate and moral incorporation of one's own life experiences, cultural background, values, and
beliefs into the relationship one has with clients is referred to as "professional use of self" in social work.
Empathize, sympathize, and connect with clients while maintaining clear limits and ethical standards,
which requires the use of your own experiences and identity as a tool. It recognizes that, when applied
professionally and respectfully, your individual past can be helpful in relating to and helping clients,
particularly when it corresponds with their experiences.
Professional use of self is a social work concept
that believes that the social worker should use their own individual skills, experiences, and backgrounds
to establish meaningful relationships with clients and increase their abilities for self-advocacy.
Professional use of self-highlights the need for self-awareness, active listening, and reflection.
My own personal includes volunteering at a nursing home. I have been able to provide the
families with information on mental health. Most families do not know or understand when
their loved ones suffer from mental health problems. Elderly people at times do not have
families that go and visit them. Most of the time they want someone to talk with and be able
to listen to what they have to say. I have been in discussions with different individuals at the
nursing home, and they all come from different backgrounds and religions.
Self-reflect,
Cultural Competence, Active Listening, Empathy, Self-Disclosure, Ethical Boundaries, and
Cultural Sensitivity is something that helps as a social worker.

One of the strengths that I possess that will help in my field placement is becoming an active
listener. I have noticed that when speaking to adults and children, the workers should listen to
how they describe things. When the individual speaks, the worker will notice the body language
changing. Another is the tone of the way they speak and answer questions. Communication is
another important factor to pay attention to when speaking with an individual.
I noticed when asking the teenager if she had ever been abused in any way, her body
language changed. The individual hesitated to answer, so I changed the subject. After 10
minutes she decided she wanted to talk about it. I would ask questions to clarify to show the
individual that I was engaged in our conversation. As the conversation became intense, her
tone started to change. She started speaking in a low and soft voice. When we first started
talking, she was speaking very loud. It is important to do the following when speaking with an
individual: 1.
Listen for total meaning
-When someone is conveying a message,
there are two meanings to gather: the content and the feeling or attitude
underlying the message. An active listener is not only tuned in to the
information conveyed, but also how it is conveyed and any nonverbal cues
present. 2.
Respond to feelings
-After listening, when a response is
appropriate, the listener should respond to the feeling of what was said. In
this way, the speaker feels understood and empathy is established. 3.
Note
all cues
-Nonverbal cues
include tone of voice, facial or body expressions, and
speed of speech. All of these taken together can convey a much deeper
meaning than merely the content of what was said (O’Bryan, A).
