PHL 111 3-1 Discussion: Credibility in the Media
For your initial post, you will discuss the concept of credibility in your own words as
learned in this course. Then, you will choose one piece of media from any source and
assess its main argument.
Personally, the concept of credibility means possessing qualities that make relayed
information believable, convincing, and trustworthy. In other words, if something is credible to
me, I don’t have to second guess trusting that it is dependable and factual.
Cite the source of the media piece in APA style.
Busari , S., & Ronald, I. (2023, November 7).
MrBeast builds 100 wells in Africa, attracting
praise – and some criticism
. CNN. https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/06/africa/mrbeast-100-
wells-africa-intl-scli/index.html
Identify at least two premises and a conclusion.
A potential premise from the argument highlighted in this article would be that Mr. Beast
helped build 100 wells in Africa. Another potential premise for the argument could be that Mr.
Beast will get “canceled” because this brings shame to the African country’s government
officials. A conclusion to this argument could be regardless of the criticism, there is now access
to clen drinking water where there once was not.
Assess the strength of the inductive argument.
I believe the strength of this inductive argument is true because the premises are true. It is a
true statement that Mr. Beast built wells in Africa, it is also true that he may be met with
criticism for doing what government officials of these African countries failed to do. Because
these premises are true, based on reasoning by induction, it is very unlikely that the conclusion is
not true.
Assess the credibility of the source, using the CRAAP test.
Currency
: This article was posted to CNN at 6:17 AM EST, Tuesday November 7, 2023, making
this a very timely article as it was posted only 2 days ago. The evidence that is being relayed are
based upon findings from Mr. Beast’s YouTube video.
Relevance
: Because this article includes two sides of an argument that are true according to the
authors, this article fits the need for this week’s discussion of finding an inductive argument.
Authority
: There is little to no information regarding Issy Ronald, but the other author,
Stephanie Busari, is a multi-award-winning journalist and editor for CNN. Because of Busari’s
credentials, and the fact that this article relays findings based on a YouTube video, the authority
falls on the shoulders of Mr. Beast. If his YouTube video is accurate, this article is in turn
accurate and has a stronger authority of being a credible source.
Accuracy
: Like the Authority portion of the CRAAP test, the accuracy of this inductive
argument lies in the hands of Mr. Beast and his team consisting of videographers and editors.
The accuracy of this video depends on how “real” Mr. Beast wants to be.
Purpose
: The purpose of this article is to inform people of the doings of Mr. Beast, a viral
YouTube sensation that appears to “make the world a better place”. This article also makes a
point to highlight the criticism that Mr. Beast will face, with the man himself believing this video
will result in him being cancelled.
