Scenario
you are a manager and one of your best employees has not been coming to work on time
due to personal struggles. Company policy indicates that after the 5
th
occurrence, you will
need to discipline the employee. However, you know that if you do this, there may be
ramifications to the employee, their work colleagues, or your entire office.
Using the
ethical concepts utilitarianism, universalism, rights-based approach, justice, the common
good, and ethical relativism, describe how you would handle the employee using each
ethical decision-making perspective.
Your paper could be structured as follows (however it
is not necessary to do so
Utilitarianism
Describe how you would handle the scenario with a utilitarianism framework,
demonstrating your understanding of the term.
Here is a slogan to describe the definition of Utilitarianism (I wouldn't use the
textbook definition): "If it works, do it"
At work we had a continues problem of employs not coming in on time but all of them
were still finishing their work. I talked with my company board, and we voted to change our
working hours to change it does not matter when the employees come in if they get all their work
done before the working day is over.
Universalism
Describe how you would handle the scenario with a universalism framework,
demonstrating your understanding of the term.
Here is a slogan to describe the definition of Universalism: "
Treat Everyone the
Same"
At work one of my best employs stopped showing up after 5 days in a row of no showing
up without telling me anything I had to find out what was going on so I talked to him and, we
worked out what was going wrong, but I still needed to warn them “if this happened again
without communication, I would have to let them go as it is a bad example for the best employ to
be skipping work.”
Rights-Based Approach
Describe how you would handle the scenario with a rights based approach framework,
demonstrating your understanding of the term.
Here is a slogan to describe the Rights-Based Approach "
Make sure to provide everyone
the rights they are entitled to"
Last month one of my workers showed up 2 hours late when I asked for the reason, they
said they worked themselves to hard yesterday and has not been getting enough sleep this has
become a recurring thing for not only him but a few others and my workers have become less
efficient, so I went to the board, and we came to the decision to lessen working hours and ever
since my employees have increased efficiency and show up on time and we are now getting the
same work done in less time.
The Common Good
Describe how you would handle the scenario with a Common Good Approach
demonstrating your understanding of the term.
Here is a slogan to describe Common Good
"Do what is best for all"
Today I had to talk with one of our best employees about being late to work for 2 days in
a row. I needed to help them understand that they cannot just keep skipping out on work. What is
best for everyone would be for me to discipline you because if I let you get away with it than
others might start to follow and then we will have no one working. I need to warn you that if this
continues to happen then I must let you go even if that does sadly mean losing my best worker
because I would rather lose my best worker then lose everyone in my company because they
think they can get away with not showing up.
Ethical Relativism
Describe how you would handle the scenario with a Ethical Relativism framework,
demonstrating your understanding of the term.
Here is a slogan to describe Ethical Relativism: "
What is considered good for you may
not be understood is good for me."
Yesterday I got a complaint from Mutiple of the workers saying that workers have been
fighting over our workload because of our newly implemented rule all the work is available for
anyone, this was just to see what would happen, but the test went very poorly, and it only worked
out for the people who got the first pick on work for the day so we had to change the new rule
lucky this had no long standing effects and after we changed it back our company increased its
productivity by almost 2x what it was originally!

Summary: Summarize your findings, and which approach you would utilize.
The common good “do whats best for all” is the most likely thing I would try to do. I
found out that a manger has a lot of responsibilities, and you need to be strict when it comes to
people not showing up to work otherwise others might believe that its acceptable to do so
Though you can work around it you need to be able to make quick decisions and maybe even
must fire your best employee.
I did not have any clue what Universalism or Utilitarianism was or what the difference
was but now I think I do know some about it now. What I found out was Universalism is
the idea
that some system of ethics applies to all people regardless of race, color, nationality, religion, or
culture.
while Utilitarianism is what
determines right from wrong by focusing on outcomes.
