Hello Class, The topic I have chosen to focus on for the final project is Social Media: Beneficial or Harmful? This article speaks of positive and negative aspects of Social Media use and suggestions on how to improve one’s experiences positively as well as how to potentially avoid negative experiences. As this article states various positive and negative aspects of Social Media use, these are all instances where a user has experienced either a positive or negative experience while utilizing a Social Media platform. This article utilizes two different premises to support their statements. The first premise is
that social media can impact one’s mental health in a positive manner. Stating that when Social Media is utilized in a positive and constructive manner, this type of positive activity can help diminish feelings of unhappiness and loneliness leading to feelings of validation, self-worth, and a greater connectivity to others.
The second premise of this article is that social media can impact one’s mental health in a
negative manner. Stating that an increased use of social media can potentially lead to an increased risk for depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
The conclusion of the article is that Social Media use can have an impact on one’s mental
health and well-being, both positively and negatively. Also stating that use of Social Media should be balanced in a healthy manner through the use of specified time limits and positive content consumption for the best possible experience. The article presents an argument that is deductive. Beginning with a general premises and/or observation of the potential impacts of Social Media use then leading to the specific conclusions of beneficial and harmful effects due to Social Media with supporting evidence. The article refers to multiple studies on the effects of Social Media use and one’s mental health and arriving at conclusions for beneficial and harmful impacts to the users based on the facts provided. This article argues for both the beneficial and harmful effects of Social Media based upon the individual user’s experience. As supporting evidence is provided on the negative and positive impact of Social Media, there does not seem to be any information as to how the user’s mental health is directly affected, only individual users and how their individual experience is perceived. This article also does not provide specific information as to how the user can reduce the potential risks that may be associated with Social Media use, only some simple suggestions to limit one’s time and content.
When utilizing the CRAPP test for this article, this is a reliable and trustworthy source. The information is current as it is happening currently and is a relevant topic to the time. The source of the information is from a trusted news outlet and journalist. The accuracy of the information is true and correct as this is an issue that is everlasting and ever evolving. References:
