What are the main points of the articles and chapters? Chapter 3 of the textbook focuses on the “Stuck Community”, which essentially refers to communities that are unable to move forward in a meaningful and are “stuck” in place due to a range of different reasons. One contributing factor is fear that is often propagated by leaders and media. The author argues that by not waiting around for a leader to solve our problems and coming together as a community, we can create the change that we want and move forward in a meaningful way that benefits everyone in the community. Chapter 4 of the textbook focuses on the “Restorative Community” which refers to ways in which a community can move forward towards their goals that betters everyone involved. The author argues that by prioritizing possibility and relatedness over self-interest and over individual needs, a community can move forward towards its set goals. The author also notes that maintaining conversation among people in a community is the key to achieve restorative community and bring people together to work for the greater good. The article by Francis Ricks (2017) discusses the impact cultural values have on decision making as a CYC practitioner. The author notes that our personal and professional values are embedded in our cultural values. Furthermore, Ricks argues that we may be unaware of our cultural values informing our professional values, and the extent to which they are affecting our decision making in the role. What are the key terms or important vocabulary that you think would be important for CYC practitioners to know? Restorative Community and Stuck Community are important terminology and concept for CYC practitioners to know as it could help them know different approaches to community building and use them within their role. Restrotive community is when communities work together for the greater good but Stuck community refers to a communit that cannot work together and are stuck in place. Another important terminology is values , which refers to tenants we hold important to ourselves. It is important to get us thinking about what the term really refers to, rather than what it means to us. It could help the CYC practitioner better reflect on their personal values and how its affecting and informing their professional value.
What is one particular passage within the reading that you found meaningful, interesting, strange, powerful, or puzzling? One paragraph that stood out to me is paragraph 2, titled “different values” on page 31 of the Ethical dilemmas in Child and Youth Care Practice: Our code of ethics reflects our cultural values article by Francis Ricks (2017). What is the above passage about? The passage compares what child protection means to a Canadian native tribe compared to what it means to the colonized government of Canada. To the native tribe, child protection means protecting the family but in the government definition, it refers to simply making sure the child is protected. This means that native child protection workers behave differently compared to non-native workers and understand that values better which informs their work and decision making as well. My rationale for choosing this passage: I thought the native community’s definition was very powerful in that protecting the child meant protecting the family. It is really a community-based way of thinking, which I relate well to as an Iranian. Also it made me think about my values, and how I would work with differing definitions of child protection myself in the CYC role, and work with the families. It made me reflect on the importance of understanding family values and dynamics, and thinking about the benefit of the child and the family as a whole as well. References Block, P. (2018).
