Week 2 Discussion Board
1.
Discuss your understanding of ethics and do you believe it can be taught?
According to my own understanding, ethics involves recognizing principles guiding moral
behavior. Ethics can encompass personal integrity, fairness, and accountability. I believe ethics
can be taught by instilling critical thinking, discussing ethical dilemmas, and promoting empathy.
Education and exposure to diverse perspectives play vital roles in shaping ethical understanding.
2.
What are some of your most important values? What is the basis of them (did they
derive from family, religious beliefs, educational experiences, or professional
experiences)?
Values like integrity, respect, and empathy are crucial to me. They stem from a combination of
familial teachings emphasizing honesty, educational experiences nurturing empathy, and
professional environments fostering respect for diverse viewpoints.
3.
Discuss three (3) values that you value and describe one professional experience when
one of those values was realized or tested.
The three values I highly value are integrity, collaboration, and resilience. One professional
experience where the value of collaboration was tested occurred during a complex project in
which cross-departmental cooperation was crucial for success. In this project, divergent
perspectives arose regarding the approach to meet a critical deadline. The clash of ideas between
departments threatened the project's progress. The value of collaboration was put to the test as I
facilitated open discussions and encouraged all stakeholders to share their insights.
4.
Discuss here your recent experiences taking the New Jersey online Ethics Training.
Discuss 3-5 takeaways you gained from completing the online training.
Legal and regulatory understanding
. I have gained insights into specific laws and regulations
governing ethical conduct within the context of New Jersey's state government. These regulatory
included conflict of interest rules, standards for financial transparency, or guidelines for fair and
unbiased decision-making.
Decision-making frameworks
.
Various ethical decision-making models or frameworks
applicable in professional settings have been discussed. They included a discussion on ethical
dilemmas and how to approach them, considering the consequences and ethical implications of
different choices.
Accountability and reporting
: I have learnt about the importance of accountability and the
procedures for reporting ethical violations or concerns. What I found interesting is the
whistleblower protections and the processes for reporting unethical behavior within the state
agency.
After reflecting on this training, what do you personally and professionally need to work on
regarding your professional code of ethics?
Following ethics training, personal and professional improvements regarding my professional
code of ethics involve a commitment to ongoing self-reflection and development. This entails
honing decision-making skills in navigating complex ethical dilemmas, fostering a heightened
awareness of evolving ethical standards within my field, and actively seeking opportunities to
enhance ethical awareness. Additionally, I aim to strengthen my resolve in upholding integrity,
transparency, and accountability in all professional endeavors while fostering a culture of ethical
behavior within my work environment. Continuous improvement through seeking feedback and
engaging in further education remains integral to consistently improving my adherence to a
robust professional code of ethics.
