Simic and the grandfather paradox
Learning Journal, Unit 6
The most exciting part of my studies this week was writing an essay about Charles Simic.
Being from Eastern Europe, I remember studying about him and the Yugoslavian War in
school. When I saw his name on the list of potential topics for our assignment, I couldn't help
but feel a surge of excitement. I did some research to refresh my memory about Charles
Simic and his work. This process brought back memories of my childhood. It reminded me of
the stories my grandparents shared about their experiences during World War II. It was
interesting to see how Simic's life and work were connected to that time.
I also learned about metaphysics through Simic's poems. He asks big questions about life and
spirituality in his poems, which I found fascinating. Overall, this assignment helped me
appreciate Simic's poetry more and connect it to my own experiences and where I come from.
This experience made me feel a deeper cultural connection and historical understanding, and
it can help other individuals empathize with the experiences of others in similar contexts.
Simic's exploration of metaphysical themes in his poetry can encourage a more philosophical
outlook on existence, spirituality, and reality. (Raineyabolton, 2020) Additionally, I believe
this or similar experience has the potential to help someone grow personally, encourage them
to reflect on themselves, and develop a more considerate and connected way of looking at the
world. This perspective highly influences the importance of art and literature in our lives.
I did not know much about metaphysics before; when I heard the word "metaphysics," I
always thought about some really complex calculations. However, after this week's learning,
I've come to realize that metaphysics is not about math at all. Instead, it's all about exploring
profound questions about the nature of reality, existence, and our place in the universe. This
newfound understanding has opened up a whole new world of thought for me. I find it
fascinating how metaphysics looks deeply into topics like the meaning of life, the existence
of God, and the relationship between the mind and the physical world. It's as if metaphysics
is a bridge between philosophy and the mysteries of the cosmos.
Another topic that grabbed my interest was the "grandfather paradox." I watched the video
several times, trying to figure out if Bruno could actually go back in time and stop his own
grandfather. But no matter how often I watched, I always came to the same conclusion: it just
didn't seem possible. As I explored this paradox and thought about it more, my ideas started
to shift. I realized that our universe is much more complicated than I thought. The paradox
made me question if time could work in unexpected ways. It challenged what I believed
about how things cause other things to happen, which we can also experience in our everyday
lives. This change in how I saw things made me more open to exploring complex ideas. It
reminded me that there's still so much we don't know about the world.
