5-2 Final Project Milestone
“Is there such thing as a soul”?

1.
The problem I have chosen is discussing the existence of the soul, if the soul is
something different from the brain, and if the soul survives after our physical death.
This problem arises from different philosophical and religious views surrounding the
concept of the soul. It also brings up different views on the afterlife, and what that
looks like. The mind-body relationship in philosophy and the many different views on
that and finding evidence that is for, and against, the existence of a soul being
separate between those two.
2.
Three resources I have decided on to help create my final essay are:
Descartes, Rene - Meditations on First Philosophy (n.d.).
http://www.classicallibrary.org/descartes/meditations/
Rene Descartes provides information on the mind-body dualism. He believes and
states in one of his six meditations about how the soul itself is distinct from all notions of
body.
Krause, P. (2021, June 19).
Plato’s “Phaedo”: The battle over the soul and the polis.
Discourses on Minerva. https://minervawisdom.com/2019/05/16/platos-phaedo-the-
battle-over-the-soul-and-the-polis/
In Plato’s “Phaedo” Socrates creates a philosophical discussion on the immortality of
the soul, and dives deep into death.

Philosophy

Our textbook covers many bases on the mind-body. It also provides insight into the
soul. I will be utilizing chapter six titled “self” to add context to my paper.
3.
My position on this topic is I believe there is such thing as a soul, I believe that the
soul is different from the brain, and that after physical death our soul does indeed
survive. I think that our soul is the inner essence and identity to everyone. Our soul
provides us with consciousness, and intuition. I believe that mind, body, and soul all
play an essential role in making each person who they are, but they have different
parts that they play, and they all differ from one another. After physical death, I
believe that our bodies are temples that each of our souls reside in. After our physical
time on this earth is no longer, our souls live on. I believe our souls live on to other
physical bodies, or even as someone passes, I believe that we can feel the souls of
those who are gone around us.
4.
An objection to my position and beliefs is that a soul is a metaphorical concept. It is
truly something we can hold in physical form or have physical proof of. The concept
of a soul is something that is hard to grasp.
5.
The objection itself raises a point of the deepness of a soul. Its limitations to being in
the physical. My position on this is knowing that the soul is s a metaphorical concept.
I know that we can see a soul in the physical world in its being. I believe I have good
sources to provide insight to bring the importance of what a soul is, even in its own
existence.
