ETHICS
Scenario #1
Maryanne is 23 and has schizophrenia, which is controlled with medication. She receives a benefit and
a small weekly wage. She lives in a one-bedroom unit and attends a supported employment program three days per week. Her eldest sister, Jane, has been acting informally as her advocate, organizing support services for her.
Silvia is Maryanne’s support worker. She visits Maryanne weekly to check that
she is taking her medication and is generally doing well.
Jane has contacted Silvia and asked her to manage Maryanne’s finances and budget. She has also asked Silvia to stop Maryanne from going out with a young man whom Jane thinks is encouraging Maryanne to stop taking her medication. She also thinks that this young man might be manipulating Maryanne into buying things for him with her benefit cheque.
Jane also wants Silvia to make Maryanne take her medication and counsel Maryanne about relationships and safe sex. Jane is pressuring Silvia and has offered her extra payment to take on these
tasks. Silvia is feeling bullied and threatened, but she is concerned for Maryanne’s welfare.
I would advise her that it is not my place to oversee my client’s finances and I would suggest a possible financial advisor to do so. I would also advise her that it is not my place to tell Maryanne what she can and cannot do but I would notify my superiors of the situation regarding the supposed boyfriend and see what to do about that. I would also let her know that I cannot force Maryanne to take her medication, but I can encourage it and suggest a weekly counsellor. I would take the situation to my higher ups due to the feeling of threat and hopefully they can speak to Jane. Maryanne is an adult and has the right to make decisions about her life, including the kinds of relationships she has and how she takes care of her finances, to the degree her mental health permits her to do so.
ETHICS
Scenario #2
Because Jeremy informed Sarah’s mom about her condition, he might have violated PIPEDA, unless Sarah didn’t sign anything saying she doesn’t consent to her personal information being shared with certain people. He also broke the law of veracity by keeping the truth about Sarah’s injuries from the supervisor, he also kept Sarah in the dark about the fact that he told her mom about her continued drug use. Jeremy is responsible for identifying and reporting ethical concerns.
