1 Week 3 Scenario and Reflection Essay Ann Marie DeLuna West Coast University PHIL 434: Medical Ethics and Issues Professor Nicole Hightower November 19, 2023
2 Week 3 Scenario and Reflection Essay This video on prenatal testing is going to emphasize the topic of eugenics, emphasizing its testing for Down Syndrome. Downs syndrome is a genetic disorder in which an extra chromosome is present in their DNA, specifically the extra chromosome being chromosome 21. Those will down syndrome will often times have developmental issues, with such distinct characteristics, which is usually present with those who have down syndrome. The scenario also goes into detail on how genetic testing can test for any abnormalities which may be present in an unborn fetus. Overall, this explains the key differences of this testing being ethical or not or is it genetic testing actually beneficial to those who are concerned if their child may have the extra chromosome present or not. Personally, as a parent myself I agree with genetic testing, as this can alleviate any worry with the unknowingness if their child may have a specific genetic disorder or not. I do not believe that it is unethical, because if a parent were to find out their child has down syndrome, they have mentally prepared for their child and its battle with the disability. As for me, I chose to have the genetic testing done for my son because, if he were tested positive for down syndrome, I would be aware, be prepared, while educating myself on how to properly care for my child. For those who would prefer not to continue the pregnancy due to finding out their child has down syndrome, they would obviously have legitimate reasons to do so. Considering that the testing is easy and straightforward as with any blood test, this can be beneficial for both mom and child. I don’t believe that they are initially telling future parents to end pregnancies which pose a threat to having a child with down syndrome, but more so of being aware, because ultimately, it’s a parent’s choice.
3 The ethical theory that correctly correlates with this scenario would be utilitarianism. This ethical theory is known to be the most influential moral theories, which not only rely on happiness of outcomes, but also to ensure better life for individuals, this moral involves the choices from individuals, and in this case, aborting a child due to down syndrome as mentioned is entirely up to the parent. In regard to the wellbeing of an individual this theory can be used for decision leading into which action would be best, including variety of choices for the specific After watching the prenatal testing scenario, it made me really understand both decisions that can be made. There are many considerations that parents can face when they are opting to prenatal testing. It is a valuable took for parents to be able to detect and abnormalities in developmental issues for parents. As a parent who has chosen to go through the process of prenatal testing, it relieved stress knowing the specific outcome of my unborn baby. Although if I were to find out that my child did end up having down syndrome, it would only help me prepare myself to provide the utmost quality care, without being surprised at the time of birth.
