“Code 2.0” by Lessig and “Alone Together” by Turkle
The two authors, Lessig and Turkle, pose very relevant issues about how technology alters our reality and interactions in their articles “Code 2.0” and “Alone Together,” respectively.
This makes them ask us what technology is and should it rule over us?
In his book “code 2.0”, Lawrence Lessig analyzes how computers and the internet contribute towards redefining people’s lives. He explains that there are various types of “codes” determining our actions while we are online. According to Lessig, we should be cautious about the deployment of technologies that may give them too much power over us.
Lawrence Lessig’s “Code 2.0” considers the latest challenges and opportunities presented against a digital background.
Lessig discusses how with the coming of digital systems and the Internet a new form of ‘code’ is developed governing our society by exercising its influence on various aspects of people’s lives such as politics and economics. Code implies both computer code and law.
Lessig argues that software code is able to constrain people’s behaviors. The code can be used to instruct us on what to do or not do while online and dictate how much liberty we have.
To this effect, the legal code comes into place. Lessig describes how Code undermines democracy. He detests the current copyright laws which hinder creativity and sharing of ideas on the internet. He argues that these laws need to change to allow for greater creativity and innovation. Additionally, Lessig mentions issues about internet privacy. In digital platforms, people are usually informed that their personal information will only be seen by their
own code but it also states what they would do with it. They fear that companies and the government may apply our data otherwise than we would prefer. Lessig discusses how individuals can impact the code. People assume that all persons including firms should contribute
to the creation code but not major corporations. The company believes grassroots movements, together with public interest groups, should participate in formulating the code.
Sherry Turkle also considers the ways in which technology is restructuring our lives as shown in her book – “Alone Together”. At times, she states that our relationships with the devices and the internet tend to take precedence over those of individuals. Turkle believes that we should realize this and ensure that our interactions with each other are still personal in nature.
“Alone Together” by Sherry Turkle also examines the impact of technology on our daily lives and relationships.
Turkle studies the extent that we are getting digitally connected and virtually intimate instead of personally related with somebody or a thing that we interact with. Technology has a major impact on our relationships and self-image. It discusses how relationships can be cheapened in a digital environment and how one’s authentic self can become
masked when presented differently online. In addition, the article says that with purposeful usage
we must try to balance virtual and face-to-face communication.
In conclusion, both articles speak about how much technology is changing this world and
how we must be wary and cautious about technology.
