Skill Development Plan
Identify three
of the learning outcomes (list), including problem solving, that you would like to further develop. For each outcome, complete all elements of the template, following the assignment instructions.
Target Skill 1
Specify the outcome you are developing (such as communication, technology, or innovation):
Delegation
Strengths: Describe your strengths.
My communication skills both written and orally are very well versed. I am quite articulate; I can get my point across without sounding condescending or rude while still getting to the heart
of the matter.
Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement.
My biggest area in communication that needs improvement is delegation. As an RN it is imperative, we delegate certain tasks, especially when working with an LPN. This is a tough area for me because I was an LPN for 14 years and I am aware they have an abundance to do under their scope of practice. When a patient asks for pain medicine or needs their dressing changed, most times I just do it myself. I don’t do it myself because I have the time or
am not busy, I do it myself because I know the LPN is also busy. There have also been many occasions where I am doing rounds, and a patient needs something while there is other staff at the nurses’ station. I have a habit of just doing these tasks myself even though I could delegate to the LPN or PCT. I am certainly not afraid to delegate or be more assertive, I truly think this is mostly out of habit. As an LPN there was not much delegation, so I have come accustomed to handling most tasks without asking for help or delegating. This is something I have been working on because there have been times where I have delayed my own workflow
to complete tasks that should have been delegated.
Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this ability during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this ability looks like.
I think developing this ability will come with time and experience. I know how to delegate, and I
know what should be delegated. I think this improvement comes with putting that knowledge into practice.

Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development. I will delegate tasks to the appropriate staff to ensure my work is completed in a timely manner. Practices for Growth
Describe 2–3 specific strategies that can be used to develop this ability
.
1.
Be more conscious of tasks that can be delegated.
2.
Practice delegating tasks when appropriate.
Action Steps
Describe an action plan around developing your selected outcomes that includes things you can do now to begin working towards your goal. What specific actions are needed to acquire knowledge and build upon your ability
?
Step 1: Research nursing delegation
Step 2:
Create a list of tasks that can be delegated and to whom.
Step 3: Delegate tasks in the field
(Add more if necessary.)

Potential Obstacles/Challenges
What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate?
I need to overcome the feeling as though I need to do everything on my own, so it is completed quicker. One challenge I currently face that will most likely continue is Some LPN’s still view me as an LPN making delegation more difficult at times.
Key Supporters
Identify 1–2 individuals that you can check in with, who will provide feedback along the way,
and act as trusted supporters. Explain how these supporters will help you meet your goal.
Supporter 1. My preceptor has been great at working with me on this issue. Even though I am not on orientation anymore, I can still ask her for support and advice. We typically work the same days, so she is usually the person to give me constructive criticism.
Supporter 2. My nurse manager is also a great resource for advice as well. If I have an issue or concern with what I should or should not delegate, I can call or text my nurse manager and ask her for feedback. 4

Supporting University Resources
Identify 1–2 university resources that can help
you meet your goal and explain how.
I found Capella’s time management page to be very helpful. Under the plan and schedule tab there is a section on stepping aside and delegation. In this section it has tactful ways you can delegate or say no to tasks so you can focus on other goals. There is also a presentation that is very insightful.

Benefits From Change/Connections to Personal, Academic, and Career Goals
Connect your goals around outcomes to three
other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals?
Being able to delegate tasks can assist me in my professional goals by showing management I am able to take care of my patients while directing my team to appropriate tasks. This could lead to promotions further leading to my personal goal of more income. Delegation skills will not help academically since I cannot delegate my schoolwork to others. However, I can delegate tasks to others to free more time for my education. 5

Target Skill 2
Specify the skill you are developing (such as communication, technology, or productivity):
Time Management
Strengths: Describe your strengths in this skill.
Once I am focused on completing a task, I am driven to do so.
Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement in this skill.
Managing my time wisely so that I can multitask while working in all areas and not hyper fixate
on one thing.
Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this skill during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this skill looks like
I will have a good work, life, school balance while still accomplishing my goals.
Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development.
I will have certain times for certain tasks to help me reach my goals while also maintaining focus on other aspects of my life.

Potential Obstacles/Challenges
What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate?
I recently accepted a full-time day shift position in an OR. This will be great for my family since I will be working while my kids are at school and my husband is at work. However, this is typically the time I work on my educational goals. Working full-time while still trying to complete my BSN is going to take away from family time.
Key Supporters
Identify 1–2 individuals that you can check in with, who will provide feedback along the way,
and act as trusted supporters. Explain how these supporters will help you meet your goal.
Supporter 1. My husband is my main supporter and will bluntly tell me if I am working too much or in my office too frequently. He is supportive of my educational
and professional goals but also lets me know when I am needed in other areas.
Supporter 2. My nurse manager is also another supporter that will give me trusted feedback. If I am lacking focus at work, she will be sure to mention that. She is also my neighbor and enrolled in Capella so we can discuss many aspects of life and these goals.

Benefits From Change/Connections to Personal, Academic, and Career Goals
Connect your goals around skills to three other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals?
Better time management will help to develop goals in my personal, academic, and professional life. Having blocks of time set aside for each area will encourage me to finish my educational goals while maintaining adequate family time. Continuing my education and finishing my degree will assist in promoting my professional development. Target Skill 3
Specify the skill you are developing (such as communication, technology, or productivity): Communication with physicians.
Strengths: Describe your strengths in this skill.
As stated previously I am excellent at written and oral communication. Areas of Improvement: Describe areas of improvement in this skill.
One of the new tasks developed while switching from the LPN role to the RN role is communication with physicians. Some of the physicians at my place of practice are not very pleasant to communicate with. I am very passive during our conversations because I feel intimidated.
Desired Outcome: Describe your goals around developing this skill during your time at Capella. Think about what improvement of this skill looks like.
My goal is to be able to communicate my patient’s needs without second guessing my verbiage.
10
PHI1200
Goal Statement: Write a positive statement that includes your desired outcome and your imagined preferred future after development.
I will be able to effectively and confidently communicate to physicians any issues or concerns regarding my patient’s.
Practices for Growth
Describe 2–3 specific strategies that can be used to develop this skill.
1.
Take part in team huddles.
2.
Do not apologize for texting or calling about a concern.
3.
Refer to the patient as “our” patient.
4.
Use the SBAR to communicate without assuming the physician knows
the specifics of each patient.
5.
Read and re-read communications prior to sending.
6.
Avoid text speaking and type out all texts.
7.
Do not text in all caps.
11
PHI1200
Action Steps
Describe an action plan around developing your skill that includes things you can do now to begin working towards your goal. What specific actions are needed to acquire knowledge and build upon your skill?
Step 1: Research practices to effectively communicate with physicians.
Step 2: Act on these practices. Such as, referring to the patient as “our” patient, communicating using the SBAR, and not apologizing.
Step 3: Analyze how these communications have impacted my relationship with physicians.
(Add more if necessary.)
Potential Obstacles/Challenges
What barriers do you need to overcome to reach your goal? What challenges do you anticipate?
The biggest barrier I need to overcome is doubting the context of my communication. I have always had my preceptor read messages prior to sending them to the physicians. She has always verified that the communication was appropriate. I just need to
be more confident in this skill. A challenge I will face is starting a new career; path with new physicians who do not know my capabilities. 12

Connect your goals around skills to three other larger goals: one personal, one academic, and one professional goal. These can be goals you’ve previously identified or new goals. How will your personal development of employability skills impact your larger goals?
Being able to communicate effectively with physicians also helps me to communicate better with clinical leaders such as the director
of nursing. This can help my professional goals with future promotions. Proficient communication is also key in my education as
well. Being able to communicate with professors and academic administration is helpful when completing assignments and accomplishing academic goals. In my personal life good communication is imperative to maintain stability and comfort.
