SC.8.8 Artifacts as Evidence: Thomas Jefferson’s Bible 1. What light does Jefferson’s Bible shed on his personal religious beliefs? Jefferson considered himself a deist, and also thought of Jesus as “one of the greatest moral teachers who ever lived.” 2. What larger historical trends may have influenced Jefferson’s religious beliefs? In what ways? Since Jefferson was most comfortable with Deism, he may have been influenced by rationalism movements in history. SC.9.3 Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Reacts to the “Missouri Question,” 1820 1. What is the “firebell in the night” Jefferson fears he has heard ring? Why does its ringing fill him with terror? Jefferson is scared that Americans disagreeing over federal government power and slavery would lead to the downfall of the union. 2. Jefferson had not participated in the writing of the Constitution, but he shared the concerns of many of the Framers that the question of slavery would ultimate divide the Union. How has Congress now found itself with “the wolf by the ears”? Congress cannot just let go of the idea of slavery immediately because it is something that already exists. It would cause chaos if they were to keep it but also if they were to let it go. 3. Although Jefferson expects he will not live to see it, what does he foretell for the Union as a consequence of the issues raised by the Missouri Compromise? Was he correct? Jefferson believes that the hard work of the past people in power would be invalidated by the Missouri Compromise. He was correct because the Missouri Compromise did fail. SC.9.4 John Marshall, Opinion of the Supreme Court, McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) 1. What important constitutional principle does Marshall confirm in this decision?
Marshall confirms that what is written in the Constitution is supreme. 2. What is the relationship between the federal and state governments, and between their respective powers, as laid out in this decision? The federal government was dominant over states, and Congress was allocated powers over the states that were not explicitly stated. 3. What possible negative consequences did Marshall see arising if Maryland had been allowed to tax the Bank of the United States? How did these consequences go beyond the particular case at hand? Marshall saw that if Maryland had been allowed to tax the Bank, they would be allowed to tax everything else. Therefore, the American people would not have designed or wanted for their government to be dependent on states. SC.9.6 Artifacts as Evidence: Erie Canal Plates 1. Who benefited from the construction of the Erie Canal? Who did not? Settlers benefited from the construction of the Erie Canal, and so were people living in the Great Lakes region. It did not negatively affect anyone. 2. What does the Erie Canal tell us about the relationship between infrastructure and commerce? An increase in infrastructure leads to an increase in commerce.
