The Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work deeply resonates with me on multiple levels. It aligns with my spiritual beliefs, emphasizes the significance of cultural competence, and underscores the crucial role of self-care in our personal and professional lives. This code serves as a guiding principle for me as I strive to provide ethical, compassionate, and effective assistance to those in need.
Growing up in a conservative family and environment, I was taught to stereotype those with diverse backgrounds, cultures, spiritual beliefs, and lifestyles that differed from my own. However, as I matured and transitioned to early adulthood, I came to realize that diversity has no impact on my life or lifestyle. As a future social worker, I recognize that I may encounter individuals with differing views and opinions. Nevertheless, I am confident that I can navigate these situations with care and professionalism by engaging in self-reflection and adhering to the NASW Code of Ethics.
Social workers who align their values with their professional ethics tend to be more invested in
their work, resulting in benefits for all involved (NASW, 2021). In order to achieve this alignment, social workers must actively seek out ways to connect their personal values to their professional ethics. By doing so, they can increase their engagement in their work and strengthen their commitment to both their values and the individuals they serve.
