I chose to write about deontology, consequentialism, and virtue ethics. Deontology is doing the right thing and having a proper motive for an act to be considered.
1
For example, we should tell the truth no matter what, even if
it were to hurt someone's feelings. One strength of deontology is that some acts are naturally right and wrong.
2
Also, people's actions, such as the example of lying, are applied to everyone, not just one person. One weakness is that you cannot always apply the same principle to everyone.
3
If
someone were to be in danger and we needed to lie to someone, to protect the person in danger, it would not be okay to do so under this ethical system.
Secondly, we will talk about consequentialism. With this ethical system, people are being judged based on the consequences of their actions.
5
We want to be able to make a decision that ends with positive results, not something that ends with negative results. The weakness of consequentialism is that it focuses too much on the consequences of our actions.
6
Honestly, we do not always realize how our actions can determine the results and/or consequences of those actions. There are times when people do things without clearly thinking through what they are doing.
Lastly, there is virtual ethics. When it comes to virtual ethics, we need to think about who we are and who we should be, especially in the eyes of God and those around us (in our communities).
7
When making decisions we must stop and think to ourselves, is this who I am? Is this the person that I want to
be/should be? Through learning who we are and who we ought to be, we can follow a life that was meant for us. We can follow a grand narrative that provides meaning to our lives.
8
There are also some weaknesses. By focusing
on ourselves, we are not paying attention to the decisions that we are making and the consequences of those decisions.
The most compelling ethical system is virtual ethics. I have read over the ethical systems more than once, but my mind keeps focusing on virtual ethics. Before I begin, I would like to say that I believe the ethical systems are intertwined. When used together, they complete one another in some way. I chose virtue ethics because it is about who we are and who we should be. When learning about the biblical worldview we think about the framework that we should be building our lives upon. It is about how we should not only interact in the world but how we see those around us. Sometimes we need to stop to think about who we want to be when making a decision. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
9
When we think about who we are and who we should be we need to
remember this verse. We were created by the Almighty so that we could be a
change to this world. Even though virtual ethics does not focus on the consequences of our actions, when we think of who we want to be, we can work on making decisions that have positive results. It all starts with us, with the people that we are. We are also formed by those around us. If we surround ourselves with positive people instead of negative people, it makes us want to better ourselves. We can then focus on the good instead of the bad in life.
