From the recorded lecture and readings this week, what are some of the new religious movements (select a few to examine in detail)?
Christian science is a Christian religion based on the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible. Christian Science theology speaks to a spiritual approach to life rather than a social, economic, or educational orientation. It is a monotheistic religion and emphasizes the First Commandment of Moses
— one God who is the "Father–Mother." The loving Father provides for, guides, and protects as the Mother; God tenderly cares for, nurtures, cherishes, and nourishes Her children. God is love and wants only good for each of us. Views on health relate to being free from physical symptoms. A healthy body is
a product of spiritual mindedness (compassion, truthfulness, forgiveness, fearlessness). The modern-day
organization of Jehovah's Witnesses is another monotheistic religion that believes Jehovah God is the only true God; Jesus is God's son, a distinct person and part of God's creation. Jehovah's Witness's beliefs in health promote respect for life to prevent many common medical problems; they accept the vast majority of treatments available today. Mormons believe that God, as the universal Father of mankind, communicates with us through prayer. Views on health center around the physical and spiritual being that are interconnected. Mormons adhere to a distinctive health code, the "Word of Wisdom," that prohibits tobacco, alcohol, tea, coffee, and drugs.
What are some features that these new religious movements share in common?
Mormonism (Latter-day Saints), Christian Science, and Jehovah's Witnesses are distinct religious movements with unique beliefs and practices. However, they share some commonalities, particularly in their origins as 19th-century American movements and specific theological perspectives. All three religions are monotheistic and based on Christianity and the teachings of Jesus. These religious founders
each claimed a spiritual principle that helped develop their sacred texts alongside the bible. For example, the Book of Mormon, the Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is considered by Christian Scientists to be foundational alongside the Bible and the WatchTower. All three movements place a significant emphasis on reaching eternal life. Mormonism focuses on missionary work, a central aspect of the faith, with young Mormon missionaries sharing the message. Christian Science engages in outreach efforts to share their beliefs. Jehovah's Witnesses engage in discussions with people about their beliefs.
Why are there new religious movements, and why does religion persist?
The emergence of new religious movements and the persistence of established religions are multifaceted phenomena influenced by psychological, social, and cultural factors. Humans often grapple with existential questions about the meaning and purpose of life. Traditional and new religions provide answers to fundamental questions, offering a framework for understanding the world and one's existence. Personal crises, a search for identity, or a desire for personal transformation can drive individuals to explore alternative spiritual paths. Economic disparities and social inequalities can contribute to the appeal of New Religious Movements, as they may promise a more just and equitable society. Some movements may also provide a supportive community for individuals facing economic or
social challenges. Increased global communication and access to information have facilitated the spread of religious ideas and practices. New movements can gain followers more easily globally, connecting with like-minded individuals across borders.
What have you learned about new religious movements and the persistence of religion for your vocation as nurse? I have learned that there will always be new religious movements as society progresses. Nursing involves working with diverse patients, whether it be ethnicity or religion. Understanding the religious backgrounds of patients will be crucial for providing patient-centered care. Religion and spirituality can significantly affect a patient's overall well-being. I may need to address spiritual concerns, provide support, or facilitate access to spiritual resources, so being knowledgeable about different religious practices and beliefs will enhance the nurse's ability to offer holistic care. Religion often influences decisions about treatment and end-of-life care preferences; being open to conversations with patients and their families will help me understand and honor these preferences.
