Shawn Cameron Grand Canyon University October 15 th ,2023 Laura Bozovic Matthew 25:35-40 is a passage taken from the Bible in which Jesus is teaching about the importance of caring for the poor the vulnerable. Jesus tells about a king who separates the sheep from the goats. The sheep are referencing the ones who have taken care of the poor, hungry, thirsty, sick, and prisoner. The goats are referencing those who have ignored the people in need. The sheep will inherit the kingdom of heaven, while the goats are to be casted out into darkness. This passé does show several ethical and social justice implications. It teaches that Christians have the responsibly to care for the poor and hungry. This, however, is not an optional responsibility but is a key part of what it means to be a follower of Christ. It also teaches that people are created in the image of God. This means we should treat others with respect regardless of what their social and economic status maybe. The tax system in Arizona is made up of a variety of taxes that include sales and income tax, and property tax. These taxes are levied on a progressive scale, meaning people with higher income will pay a higher percentage of their income on taxes. The issues are that the tax burden is not evenly distributes. The sales tax is regressive, meaning it effects the lower income people harshly. This is because the “lower income people spend their percentage of their income on goods, and services than those that have a higher income” (McClory, T, 2020). There is also another issue that this tax system does not adequately fund essential public services. “Arizona ranks 49 th in the nation in per-pupil funding for public schools, this has a disproportionate impact on low- income students and students of color” (McClory T, 2020). The responsibility of Christians caring for the poor and hungry is informed by tax policy in several ways. The tax policy can be used to redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor. Progressive income tax rates and other tax policies could be used to help benefit low-income people. Jesus was inviting his followers to take specific actions by feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming a stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting the prisoner. While inviting them to be advocates for justice and to create a more just and equitable society.
