Internal Principles Assignment Our Founding Fathers held God as the ultimate authority, and as such, felt that government would not succeed if not based upon the Bible. There were three principles that they felt were prominent when drafting the constitution. The first principle was: Man is of Divine Origin. This principle is the belief that man is created by the image of God. “Only as an intentionally and purposefully created being, made in the image of God, can man have any value.” ( Contending for the Constitution: Recalling the Christian Influence on the Writing of the Constitution and Biblical Basis of American Law and Liberty ) This would mean that children are not conceived by mistake or accident. “ Behold,   children are a heritage from the LORD,   the fruit of the womb a reward.” ( Psalm 127:3 ) The second principle that laid a foundation for our Constitution was: Man Has Individual Value. This was the belief that each person had their very own purpose that was specifically God-given. “With the rare exception of identical twins, no two people look alike and no two personalities are the same, each snowflake is unique, the multitude of types of animals, plants, and topography all scream loud and clear of the principle of individuality.” ( Contending for the Constitution: Recalling the Christian Influence on the Writing of the Constitution and Biblical Basis of American Law and Liberty ) By recognizing this, the founders believed individual liberty and freedom were substantial to our Constitution. The third principle that helped to lay a foundation for our Constitution was: The Source of Individual Rights is God, Not Government. The founders believed that God-given rights were more secure than any government granted rights, and that the government did not have the power to govern them. The God-given rights that they refer to are God’s ten commandments. 1
If these principles were supposed to lay a foundation for our Constitution, then how can the government govern the right to abortions? If God is the ultimate authority, then they should abide by the law of the Bible. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew   you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” ( Jeremiah 1:5 ) As previously stated, children were created by the image of God and for a specific God-given purpose. God was clear within his ten commandments. “You shall not murder.” ( Exodus 20:13 ) Therefore, the Bible is clear that abortion is murder. So, then what about same-sex marriage? Shouldn’t everyone have the right to love whom they please? “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” ( Leviticus 20:12 ) While there is no direct link to a woman having sexual relations with another woman, we must assume this to also be wrong. God created woman for man. “For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.” ( Corinthians 1:8-9 ) God intended woman for man, not man for man or woman for woman. 2
