W RITE CLEARLY ; COMPLETE SENTENCES , ACCURATE SPELLING , AND PROPER GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION ARE EXPECTED . T HIS ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 20 POINTS . Please type all responses into the expandable tables and text boxes provided. I NTRODUCTION You have learned about the central roles that substances have played in societies and you have contemplated the use of alcohol and substances and their effects on various aspects of life as a student. You have also learned about strategies for preventing alcohol and substance misuse. The purpose of this assignment is for you to reflect on what you think would be effective strategies for helping you and your peers avoid problems related to substance misuse. This should be based on your experiences as a student and on what you’ve learned in this course. R EFLECTION 1. Review the pages discussing the early history of alcohol, cannabis, cigarette, and e-cigarette use in “The History of Substance Use, Laws, and Policies” online module. Compare and contrast how these substances came to be prominent in society. (2pts) What similarities do you see in the histories? What differences do you notice between them? The similarities I see in the histories are the legal prohibitions and consequences surrounding alcohol, cannabis, cigarette, and e-cigarette use, increasing production and popularity The differences I noticed between them was the medical amnesty uses on only certain substances such as alcohol, impacts of being under the different substances, and social host laws 2. Try to think broadly about what you learned from the final online modules, “The History of Substance Use, Laws, and Policies” and “Substance Misuse Prevention Strategies”. In your opinion, what is the most significant concern surrounding substance misuse on college campuses? (2pts) Describe the concern and how you believe it came to be. Discuss why you believe this is the most significant concern. In my opinion, the most significant concern surrounding substance misuse on college campuses is fear of legal repercussions. I think it is the most significant concern because a lot of people that drink are typically underage, and they don’t want to get caught. It is also significant because it is extremely dangerous to not report or seek help when an individual is too drunk, so I think that the medical amnesty laws are very crucial to a college campus. 1
3. Review the pages on individual and environmental alcohol misuse prevention strategies, cannabis misuse prevention strategies, and harm reduction theory in the “Substance Misuse Prevention Strategies” online module. How do you see these strategies being used around you? List at least three specific examples of prevention strategies you see on your campus or in your community. Discuss how effective you believe each of these tactics to be by referencing the prevention strategies explained in the online module to support your positions. First prevention strategy/policy and discussion of effectiveness (2pts) Medical amnesty laws: I believe that this tactic is effective and supports the prevention strategies in the online modules. This tactic is effective because it takes the fear out of students that are scared of the legal repercussions. It allows the affected student to get medical help and the individual who called 911 to be clear of any consequences Second prevention strategy/policy and discussion of effectiveness (2pts) Alcohol and Drug Edu freshman requirement: The University requires all freshmen to complete alcohol and drug training prior to the first day of classes. I think that this strategy is effective because it acclimates all freshmen at the U to the consequences of alcohol and drugs before the semester starts. Third prevention strategy/policy and discussion of effectiveness (2pts) Prohibition of drugs and alcohol in residents' halls: I think that this strategy isn’t very effective,if students are going to have alcohol or other substances in the dorm, they will find a way. 4. Review the page “Young People’s Use of E-Cigarettes and The Strategies Manufacturers Use to Target Them” in the “Substance Misuse Prevention Strategies” online module. Which category of influence do you perceive to be the strongest amongst your friends or for your community? (2pts) Name the category of influence. Discuss why you think it has been more powerful than the other categories. Describe how you see it impacting the choices of those around you related to e-cigarettes. *Note: Resisting an influence is a response you could describe. I think the category of influence I perceive to be the strongest amongst my community is environmental influence. I think this is more powerful than other categories because there is a lot of vaping among the youth and just college kids in general. Companies have also targeted the youth and it can be intriguing because it is flavored. I think that 5. Review the pages “Substance Use During Youth is Associated with Substance Use in Adulthood” and “E-Cigarettes Are Leading to Cigarette and Cannabis Use” in the “Substance Misuse Prevention Strategies” online module. Discuss what these associations mean to you and how they apply to your values. Does this information influence your decision to use substances? Why or why not? (1 pt) The three associations are important to me in keeping the community safe and reflecting my values in effective and preventative ways. This information does influence my decision to substances in negative ways. It opened my eyes to the life- altering consequences and pressures it can cause while in college. 2
6. What suggestions regarding alcohol, cannabis, e-cigarette, and general substance misuse prevention do you have for college administrators, student affairs personnel, educators, and other decision-makers? Identify at least two different strategies that you think might be the most effective in your community. Think creatively! You are not limited to the strategies discussed within the online modules. Your ideas might involve programming, services, education, environmental changes, legal sanctions, policy changes, or something else. Consider the facts that you know, information you’ve learned in this course, your own personal experiences, and the experiences of those around you. Why do you think each of these strategies will be effective? First strategy and why it will work (2pts) Rather than prohibiting alcohol from the dorms, create more resources so students are smart about it. I think this strategy will work because students have alcohol in their rooms regardless of university guidelines, it’s just a matter of when they’ll get caught. Second strategy and why it will work (2pts) A second strategy that could be implemented is the continuation of alcoholedu online modules before you are able to register for classes. This strategy will work because in order for any students to register for classes they have to finish the alcohol modules and it’s effective because it spreads a large amount of information to the whole freshman class easily. 7. What are some of the ways you believe students can bring about changes on their campus or in their community, whether that be about substance misuse prevention or any other issue? Describe at least two ways students can be influential. (2pts) Some other ways that I believe students can bring about changes on their campus or their community is setting up peer resource fairs on campus about drug and alcohol use. Another way is to organize games or events students can participate in. 8. Which of the strategies or methods that you described in your response to question 7 would you be most likely to use if you wanted to advocate for change? Why? (1pt) I would most likely like to use the campus fair strategy because it would keep me interacted and engaged.
