Summary of Article:
The Role of Cultural Values and Intercultural Communication
written
by David Livermore, Leading with Cultural intelligence when he states in his
writings that stand out Cultural Matters.
He states in his introduction “With cultural intelligence, we engage in our rapidly shrinking world with an
underlying sense of mutual respect and dignity for people everywhere and better accomplish our
personal and organizational objectives.
Mr. Livermore states the meaning of Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively
across national, ethnic, and organizational cultures. In looking at this CQ Capabilities there are
four (4) primary CQ capabilities CQ Drive, CQ Knowledge, CQ Action, and CQ Strategy.
CQ Drive looks at the level of interest, persistence, and confidence during multicultural
interactions, CQ Knowledge looks at you are understanding about how cultures are similar and
different, CQ Action is your ability to adapt and working in multicultural contexts, and lastly is
CQ Strategy which looks at your awareness and ability to plan for multicultural interactions.
In me analyze in in CQ in the evaluation that looks at stages from Low, Moderate and High my
CQ Drive was (67) CQ Knowledge was (73) and the CQ Strategy was (71) and last my CQ Action
was (78).
When looking at my overall my extrinsic interest in CQ drive was (84) which means that as I
learn about t=different cultures I enjoy the experiences as I gain the knowledge and influences
of the different cultures, I apply this to me being in the military and learning the different
cultures over the years while serving as a solider.
Reflection/ Analyze/ Apply
Part 1 Reflection:
In CQ Knowledge my high score was (92) in Business and next was (84) in
values and Norms In that respecting the cultures and understanding the value of social
interaction and respecting another culture religious beliefs also understanding the different
values of teachings that other cultures have with their children in educating them about
business and engaging them in family decisions in representing the father as a young man
representing the father as in the Jewish Community.
Christians should work hard to maintain the temple of the Holy Spirit so that their
opportunities for service will be enhanced and not limited by the differences in our cultural
values and the act of speaking words that may be disrespectful to other cultures.
Creating an environment in which we can ask the hard questions concerning our work in
ministry in reaching across different cultures in communication can be reexamined as a sound
way to increase the likelihood of continuing ministry opportunities.
Part 2 Analyze:
Culture in ministry can and must become effective to everyone in the world in
doing ministry to each group of cultures we are in contact with each group will have to be
suited to its special needs and abilities.
In CQ Strategy my overall score was in Awareness which was an (84) and Checking was (73) As I
become aware of other cultures values and ways of communicating my awareness of self and
respecting others when presenting myself to them in being respectable to the norms and values
of one approaching with hand and eye contact not to encounter a false sense of respect of the
difference in beliefs.
In dealing with CQ Action my scores were overall (78) with my highest score in Nonverbal with
an (84) I am always watching and learning the different behaviors of people as I come to know
and respect them in life while in my travels.
Part 3 Apply:
Many theories are being disseminated regarding the differences in cultural
communication, regardless of the reasons for the differences in all our diverse backgrounds
once the church educates their congregation on the different cultures within the communities
the church must educate all believers to effectively communicate the Word of God to the
community within the community’s cultural language.
Conclusion:
Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively across national, ethnic,
and organizational cultures, as we communicate the words of our God to others in different
settings our translations may offend some if we do not understand their culture and with that
approach it may be offensive to others so we must learn to communicate effectively.
James 4:6” But he gives us more grace, that is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but
shows favor to the humble.”
