Module 1 Check-In
Q1: what did you find most challenging in this module?
This module introduced students to the topic of disability in its various forms as well as how it has progressed through the years. As someone with little to no previous knowledge on this subject matter the idea that I struggled with most is that of having no concrete definition of disability. Throughout the majority of my education there has always been definitive ways of defining and discussing a topic. This course is interesting as it introduced to me the idea that everyone conceptualizes disability differently. A person experiencing a disability may look at it in complete opposition to how someone without a disability conceptualizes the experience. In this way disability is a socially constructed concept. Further, this module highlighted that as disability is socially constructed it is dictated by prominent social forces that change over time and space. This makes a singular definition of disability even less attainable as it is context (time period) dependent. Simultaneously, this highlights why having a singular definition would be of little point as it would be constantly changing while encompassing views of only one particular group. Thus, though challenging for me to grasp at first, I have learned that defining disability is an experience unique to each individual.
Q2: What did you find most meaningful in this module?
In this module we learned about the basics of disability as they have been conceptualized both in the past and presently. The most meaningful thing I learned in this module was why there was such a need for not only disability awareness but also for a definition of disability. Previous to this course, I engaged in stereotypical thinking surrounding disability that it was uncomfortable and best to avoid. I realize now that my avoidance of the topic was due only to my own lack of knowledge and understanding on how to properly approach it. Thus, learning the reasons why disability must be spoken about (such as to honour the experience of disabled persons) has helped me to realize that my perception needed changing. This is mainly due to the fact that my views disregarded the limitations associated with the condition by ignoring their prevalence.
Q3: Take the opportunity below to reflect upon if your perception of disability has changed or not during this past module and describe why
Throughout this module I gained lots of insight on disability that was previously unknown to me.
As such my perception of disability has changed slightly. However, as this is only the first module, I believe my perception will be influenced further in the coming weeks. For the most part I feel my horizons were widened in regard to disability as I previously took on a very stereotypical do not ask, do not engage approach to the topic. I had a basic understanding of what
disability was but no idea how to approach the topic respectfully nor why there was a need to do so. In this way even just learning the basics of disability allowed me to perceive it in a more open
way. Specifically, learning that all perceptions of disability are unique helped me feel less guilty about my closed mindset. Additionally, learning different models to approach the subject helped me to formulate my own perceptions while learning about the mistreatment of disabled persons in the past helped me realize why proper education now can prevent the past from repeating
itself. All of this to say that I am now in a place where I am excited to learn about disability rather than choosing ignorance.
