All Men are Created Equal Assignment In this short essay, I will discuss whether AR 600-13 violates the Biblical Principles that were discussed in this week's reading material. In order to see whether it violates the biblical principle one must understand the background of the AR 600- 13. Under the risk rule, women could not have an occupation that would expose them to direct combat, hostile fire, or capture. Although the DoD did allow the military women to be assigned to positions that they were qualified for. As though they would exclude them from assignments that are below the brigade level. As for the Army policy for assigning women the AR 600-13 predated the Apsin memorandum which states that the ''military services policies and regulations could include certain restrictions to assign military women where units and positions are doctrinally required to physically collocate and remain with direct ground combat unit that are closed to women''. (Harrell, M. C., Castaneda, L. W., Schirmer, P., Hallmark, B. W., Kavanagh, J., Gershwin, D., & Steinberg, P. (2007).) Whereas the AR 600-13 states that female soldiers allow women to serve as an officer or enlisted specialties, positions but excludes specialties, position units that are assigned a routine mission to engage in direct combat. The way army policy would define direct combat as ''engaging an enemy with individuals or crew served weapons while being exposed to direct enemy fire, a high probability of direct physical contact with the enemy personnel and substantial risk of capture''. (Harrell, M. C., Castaneda, L. W., Schirmer, P., Hallmark, B. W., Kavanagh, J., Gershwin, D., & Steinberg, P. (2007).) Although Congress repealed the legal restriction against women serving in combat aircraft positions the army did not update its policy against women in combat. While Aspin revised the DoD policy in 1994 about women in combat. Now it is really critical to know that these policies are assignments policies about women rather than general employment policies. The policies don't constrain what each individual woman can do in
operations it was just guidance on where women can be formally assigned. ''The media reports that some senior Army leaders agree that it is time to reassess the Army's assignment policy. (73) However, under the DOD policy outlined in the Aspin Memorandum, the Army can only remove the unit size restriction or the "collocation" restriction, as stated in Army Regulation 600-13. The other assignment restrictions can only be lifted by a change in the policy at the DOD level. '' (McNulty, S. S. (2012).) Although the military gave women restrictions they didn't treat the women as mean meaning because they were women they were restricted as though all men are created equal this would include women but the United States always would have excluded women. The equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment prohibits the states from denying a person their equal protection of laws and discriminating against racial minorities, religious minorities, and women. ''The Equal Protection Clause, as interpreted by the Courts, does not demand a rigid equality in all respects. The basic test used by the Court is whether the distinction complained of is “reasonable.” One way of deciding is to determine whether the group singled out favors or opposes the different treatment. If it tends to favor it, the group may be enjoying a particular privilege—as suggested, for example, by the military draft, which in the United States has always excluded women. If the group selected for unequal treatment tends to oppose it, however, the group may be experiencing unwarranted discrimination—as suggested by a law which arbitrarily excludes women or minorities from a certain profession.'' (McClellan, James. Liberty, Order, and Justice. Liberty Fund, 1989.) The question presented was if the AR 600-13 violates biblical principles. I believe it wouldn't violate the biblical principle as it violates the equality principle rule which is any law that identifies as a specific group for favored treatment should be presumed to violate the equality principle. The AR 600-13 allows women to enlist as any officer in the military but they would not be able to fight in combat like men can fight in combat. From the biblical point of
view of things God created Man and Woman he created the female sex to meet the needs of the male and this is found in the New and Old Testament women were to serve the men and women wanting to fight in combat is unrighteous according to the bible. In closing although the AR 600- 13 doesn't violate a biblical principle in the Bible the book of Titus 2:4-5 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. God created women to help the man not to be their commander so having a restriction on what women can do in the Army doesn't violate the biblical principle.
