Render Unto Caesar According to the biblical worldview is ''hate crimes'' enhancement a proper exercise of the civil government jurisdiction? To answer the question we have to discuss the issue at hand which is determining who gave the government civil authority and what excise could the civil authority exercise. In the beginning, God created mankind in his image. (Genesis 1:27) Man must respect God as the authority but also man should respect the civil authority which God has ordained for man's good. ''Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.'' (Romans 13:1-7) '' If civil government derived its legitimacy from God, then one could well expect that such government authority would also be limited by God.'' (Titus.Herbert 1994 page 67 paragraph 3) When Locke stated that the legislative authority in civil government is bound by the law of nature meaning that the legislator makes the rules and the other men's actions must be conformable to
the law of nature. When the founding fathers created the Declaration of Independence in 1776, it was so that mankind should have respect as well as for their social rules. On the belief that all men are created equal and they would have the right to life, liberty, and happiness. That all men have those rights because they exist. They would also state that people have governments to protect their rights, and when their government becomes tyrannical or begins encroaching upon their rights, it is their right and duty to change or end the government to protect themselves. ''The Preamble of the Declaration of Independence is based on the theory that the American people are entitled to certain natural rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that all men are created equal. The main text of the document, on the other hand, asserts that the inhabitants of the colonies are entitled to various constitutional, common law, and charter rights. The claim that “all men are created equal” has received different interpretations, one being that the colonists were simply contending that the American people, as a nation, were entitled to the same rights as Englishmen. '' (McClellan, James. Liberty, Order, and Justice. Liberty Fund, 1989.) If God gave authority to the civil government then we as people should be able to follow those rules that were established to be followed and not to break them. When it comes to taxes remember the people of Palestine who were under the Roman empire they tried to trap Jesus so that he would say that it was an issue paying taxes but he told them "Whose face is on that coin", and they replied Caesar and Jesus told them "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God''. As Christians, we should not compromise our beliefs or our values but we do have to follow what rules the government has given us. Caesar was the authority so the people of the Roman Empire had to abide by Caesar's rule. When it comes to hate crimes after the enactment of the Civil Act right in 1968, the federal government started prosecuting people against hate crimes.
In closing out this essay I believe that the hatred crimes enhancement is a proper exercise of the civil government jurisdiction according to the biblical worldview. I believe that anyone who can commit a crime against someone's race, sex, or religion should be prosecuted because they are not God and can't judge that person for their preference. In the Bible, it says that you should love thy neighbor as you love thyself. God created laws for the people to follow and the Bible is like a manual guide to how Christians should live their life. There are so many scriptures in the bible that go against hate so as a Christian I will always support laws against hate crimes there have been so many senseless deaths because a person took it upon themselves to harm another person because they are not like them.1 John 3:14-15 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. References
