Topic 4 DQ 1
Read GCU's "Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work." One of the unique features of
the statement is that it calls you to consider your career choices as a vocation.
Define
vocation
and explain how viewing your career as a vocation, rather than merely a "job,"
impacts the nature of what you do at work and your relationship to the people you work with
and for. How might you apply the concept of work as vocation in your studies and your new
career path to positively affect your work environment, your chosen field, and those around
you?
The DQ response must be 150-200 words.
According to GCU's "Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work" (2015), vocation
signifies a significant opportunity to serve others, which is a crucial moment to worship the
Lord by promoting the well-being of others. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of
vocation is a strong inclination or summons toward a particular state or course of action. In
simpler terms, it is often called one's "calling." I strongly advocate for finding passion in your
profession. Pursuing a master's degree in healthcare administration is my calling, as it brings
me contentment and aligns with a dream I have had since my undergraduate days. Although I
have explored other career paths in healthcare and cherished providing care and compassion to
patients, I needed help finding the balance and continued to search for contentment. I am
incredibly fortunate to have found a career where I can positively impact the world daily. I
genuinely love what I do and appreciate my colleagues, and this passion for my job has driven
me to pursue higher education. I will harness this motivation and happiness to excel in my
degree program and work toward my personal and professional objectives.
Integrating work and vocation is essential for a successful and fulfilling career. This
integration should commence from your educational journey through to your professional
practice, as it forms the foundation for generating positive outcomes for yourself and others.
When individuals acknowledge and value what they love to do daily, it leads to increased
success that ripples to everyone around them. Finding happiness in your job impacts your
interactions with coworkers, families, and clients, influencing your success and performance.
Similarly, pursuing an education in a field you are passionate about can have the same effect. It
transforms your relationships with fellow students and family and can even enhance your
professional life when you know that you are learning and growing in a field that brings you
joy.
