Now I will utilize research in Chevrons position in its synopsis which includes its mission statement, management philosophy on employee communication, goals of the communication plan, target audience characteristics, communication tools and communication channels. Then I will develop a policy in which it discusses how we will communicate during a crisis. Finally, I will use all parameters that have been set to develop a communication plan. Chevron Corporation (Chevron), known as the world’s fourth-largest energy company, was founded in 1879 as the Pacific Coast Oil Company. Chevron has a hand in various oil and gas chains. This includes exploration and production, storage, and pipeline transportation to refining, marketing and distribution of oil and gas products. Starting out in Pico Canyon Oilfield (north of Los Angeles), Pacific Coast Oil Company was then purchased by Standard Oil in 1900. After breaking off Standard Oil in 1911, it became known as Standard Oil of California (SoCal). SoCal then became Chevron Corporation after acquired Gulf Oil in 1984. However, During the 1930s SoCal began its international operations when geologists discovered oil reserves in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Which brings me to my next point. Although Chevron is headquartered in San Ramon, California it has a reach of more than 180 countries. Which now employs more than 59,000 people worldwide. Chevrons mission statement is to provide reliable, affordable, and ever-cleaner energy for millions around the world. In terms of communication with employees Chevron’s CEO and managers have utilized the Workplace in hopes that it can connect everyone and provide a platform for people from all over the world to come together and share ideas innovate, collaborate, and be inspired. The Workplace helped make the CEO communicate directly to employees and made the CEO more visible in the organization. The Workplace has provided employees a chance to be a voice in the corporation and to other business prospects. Chevron strives to communicate openly to its
employees. Chevron offers an annual Worldwide Employee Town Hall and other business units have meetings that address specific topics such as safety and business performance. The goal of this communication plan is to align and inspire, build relationships, grow capabilities, and deliver results. According to the article “10 SMART Goals for Communication (Plus Tips for Setting Them) one way to achieve a good communication channel is through team building. Which Chevron does through building relationships. Chevron is committed to building trust, fostering a workplace in which one can feel they belong and collaborate with each other. Chevron further achieves this by giving and receiving feedback. Another way to achieve open communication is through meetings which have already been discussed previously. Just a refresher Chevron has ample opportunities for employees to be a voice. It is equally important to set expectations and communicate with a shared purpose. Lastly, another form to enhance communication is through motivation. Which Chevron achieves by empowering people to make decisions and remove barriers to achieve results. Notice that this type of communication is intended for everyone, as such the approach to different genders should be specialized. For instance, authority should be used when talking to men to keep them engaged and listening. Communication should also be short and to the point for men. Similarly, a face-to-face meeting would be more beneficial when talking with men than with women. As for women we need to set a time limit as they tend to talk too much. When it comes to culture and languages, we must be informed about them and how they communicate. For instance, the Muslim culture limits women talking to men until at least after marriage. Keeping this in mind we should employ people that are either multilingual or can translate for individuals whose language maybe other than English. Making sure you know what to say, how
to answer, how to avoid disrespect and what gestures are okay to make is also important (LeBaron, 2003.) With the prospects of the internet growing into a huge entity and with a worldwide employee base I believe utilizing virtual communications would be most beneficial. Even this outlet has many applications such as Skype and Zoom. Other forms such as e-mail and instant messaging through social media like Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) are becoming the new “norm”. With the help of technological advancement these interactions can be viewed on a smart device such as a cellphone or tablet. Even media can be used as a form of communication. Regular mail, newsletters and reports also help people communicate and gather information. Chevrons main communication tool and website has been discussed (Workforce). Meetings are also a good way to ensure that employees understand what is expected of them and what the website offers. Meetings are also a great gateway between managers and employees to establish open communication. Offering open communication is a great way to keep communication flowing. Another form of meetings is through teleconference in which the manager can discuss whether an employee needs improvement or be praised for a job well done. Training, lectures, and classes are the best way to help managers and employees learn all new products, policies, and programs that take place. Chevron has an already prepared plan for potential emergencies and its efforts are focused to prevent, prepare, respond, and recover in times of crisis. Chevron has the tools and processes to effectively manage an emergency as well as business continuity. The operating facilities should have a developed emergency response and business continuity plan in preparation for all risks. If the facilities are unsure of what to do the corporate emergency

response team offers guidance and expertise in emergency response, crisis management, and business continuity. Similarly, the team should develop and maintain emergency procedures as well as conduct drills. Even training should go into emergency response. Chevron has a strong media representation when it comes to communicating their plan of action of handling bad news about the company. Chevron has enlisted the services of their PR person Gene Randall to represent Chevron to bring light about the situation that occurred in Ecuador. Chevron was forced to pay for damages for allegedly contaminating the Amazon rainforest. However, Chevron utilized various techniques and channels to get their side of the story. This includes videos and social media in X (formerly known as Twitter). In the video it explores the positive and negative side of the story. This shows that Chevron works hard to ensure that there is equitable and balanced treatment. Resources: 10 smart goals for communication (plus tips for setting them).
