Based on your ethical decision-making preferences and the ethical-decision making approaches, how would you respond in this situation? The way I would respond to this situation, would be first of all I would want to put myself in the shoes of the mother. Clearly she is stealing the baby formula out of necessity. Although it is not the right decision, and I don’t condone it under any circumstance I understand. A mother trying to feed her child is different from someone stealing just because. The ethical-decision that I would take would be a utilitarian approach. I would try to find a solution to obviously help the mother out, but also make sure the store gets paid for the formula. Identify and explain which of the ethical decision-making approaches you used to arrive at your decision. The reason I would take this approach is simple for my personal beliefs: a mother feeding her child is top priority. With that being said the store owner has to eat as well. What I would do is simply pull the mother aside and tell her I’d pay for the formula, but please don’t do this again. Agencies are out there to offer help to people that truly need it. My decision is purely based on everyone getting what they need without anyone having to take a loss. I would also take down her information and exchange numbers with her should she need help again in the future. If you saw your neighbor stealing clothes for herself, would you respond differently to the situation? Why or why not? No, if I saw my neighbor stealing clothes it wouldn’t be any different. The only difference would be that I would ask around if anyone has clothes for her. For me personally, I know in today’s world this would be especially relevant. So many people today are hurting that I try to help anyone who really needs it. We all need to be kind to others.
