CRITICAL THINKING NO.1: ETHICAL DECISION MAKING 1 Critical Thinking No. 5- The Final Phase: Evaluation and Termination Troy University Online Individual Social Work SWK3390 Stacey Harrell, LMSW Matthew R. Sanders May 9, 2021
CRITICAL THINKING NO.1: ETHICAL DECISION MAKING 2 Why is termination important in your relationship with a client? Termination can be both good and bad for the client. There are two generally two types of termination: unplanned and planned. Unplanned terminations can occur when a client withdraws treatment of if the social worker leaves because if illness, job change or something else. Planned terminations “occur when the clients’ goals are achieved, when transfer or referral is anticipated and necessary, or when service is concluded due to the time-limited nature of the setting (such as hospitals and schools) or the treatment modality used (such as brief treatment or fixed-length groups.)” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, & Strom-Gottfried, 2016). No matter what type of termination happens it is important to prepare your client from day one. Termination is important because can have a major impact on how your client views their experience with the social worker and how likely they are to keep practicing what they have learned. Identify what feelings are often associated with termination? There are many different feelings that can come with termination. With any relationship the end is always difficult but it is what you do after that relationship that measures your success. Anger, denial, avoidance, reporting recurrence of old problems or generating new ones, and attempting to prolong contact are all common reactions to termination. All of these reactions and feelings should be met with caution and the client’s best interest in mind. How might you help a client with these feelings and or fears as it relates to termination? I think giving your client time and space to process their feelings is one way help them with termination. Being open and honest with them whether it was a planned or unplanned termination. Never argue with the client but make sure you are compassionate, direct and clear on why the relationship is ending. “The process affords the opportunity to model ending a

Effective termination equips the client with the skills and knowledge necessary to sustain gains or to seek further help as needed in the future.” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, & Strom-Gottfried, 2016).
