Section II - 65 mins Task A Technology is the science of arranging life so that one need not experience it - Positivism? - no longer live in the present - social media, VR, AI If there is technological advance without social advance, there is, almost automatically, an increase in human misery. - Social advance is necessary with technological advance - The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village - Globalization - Shared information, knowledge, ideas and resources with people across the world - Wikileaks - julian assange - How some information is still kept secret and not available to the public - In the image of a global village - Village: small town, isolated, shared resources, everyone knows each other (social media) Only science can hope to keep technology in some sort of moral order. - Science: positivism - Keeps technology in moral order? Our technological genius has got us into trouble, but it is also the way we will escape our problems - Tech AI - > can be trouble in the wrong hands, and is sharing information rapidly and exponentially - Escape problems -> through social media ‘escapism’, video games etc. Also does create solutions to problems we face e.g. computerisation and automation of production lines. - Theme: Technology Quote: Our technological genius has got us into trouble, but it is also the way we will escape our problems - Contention: Reliance on the convenience that technology provides, limits creativity. Technology; the bane of our existence, and the object of our desires. Technological innovation has posited both great advancements to our quality of life and a threat to the status quo, since the invention of Edison’s lightbulb. Technology has come a long way over centuries, and we now venture into a world where artificial intelligence is used to write assignments, and cars can drive themselves. Central to the debate of whether technology is a vehicle for liberation or oppression, is that most individuals, especially those residing in developed nations, cannot
imagine a life without it. Despite technology's contribution to human advancement and convenience, an overreliance on technology can be detrimental to individual expression and creativity. TS1: There is an overreliance on technology within our lives, due to the convenience it affords us. In today’s globalized, interconnected world, our reliance on our smart devices, social media and the internet has increased ten-fold, and is reflected within increasing screen-time. We use technology everyday, from our alarm TS2:

Task B Theme: Aging The belief that youth is the happiest time of life is founded on a fallacy. The happiest person is the person who thinks the most interesting thoughts, and we grow happier as we grow older. - We get happier with age as we have more experience and therefore more interesting thoughts Almost everything that is great has been done by youth As one becomes older the world becomes colder - World is colder - Cold: dark, misery, isolation, lack of hope, blue, ice, lack of motivation As we grow older life becomes more challenging and complicated, but it can also become more satisfying. - Childhood: carefree - no responsibilities, can live in the moment - Adulthood: comes with responsibilities but also a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us - ultimately it is important that we make the most of all stages of our life by living in the present. - Satisfaction of growing old: wisdom, understanding, experience - connections with people and reflection of our own growth and development He who is of calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition youth and age are equally a burden. - If you are happy Narrative: Reflection: Contention: TS1: TS2:
