13 th amendment Quote – “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Signed December 6, 1865 (eight months after the Civil War) Ends institution of slavery o “Emancipation Proclamation” 14 th amendment (1868) First part - “All persons born or naturalized in the US, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” “Birthright citizenship” o Before, African Americans were not considered citizens as per the Dred Scott Decision in 1857; this part of the amendment made them citizens Second part - Representatives shall be apportioned among several states according to respective numbers, counting whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed o Three-fifths compromise (1787) – blacks were worth three-fifths of a person Reversed by the fourteenth amendment making all citizens “equal” in terms of representation 15 th amendment (1870) Section 1: “ The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude Gave black men the right to vote; black women would have to wait until 1920 for the 19 th amendment to pass (gave all women the right to vote)
